Tips for "SH"

A few simple steps to teach the "SH" sound is telling the child where to put his/her tongue, jaw, lips, tongue and teeth to make a good "SH" sound. Here are some things you can do at home:

1. Have your child slightly pucker his/her lips

2. Touch your child's tongue with a Popsicle stick, toothbrush, or end of a spoon just behind the tip of the tongue. Have him/her place the part of the tongue just touching on the roof of the mouth behind the "bumpy part" (not touching the teeth)

3. Have the child lower the tongue just a little, the popsicle stick or toothbrush could be used to help your child lower it slightly.

4. have the child hold that position and pucker the lips and breathe out through the mouth. Then have your child imitate you saying "sh" doing all of the above.

Other ideas/ways may be:

Shaping

If your child can produce a good /s/ sound or a good “ee” sound we can shape/teach the SH sound starting from one of these sounds.

SH from /s/

  1. Have your child say /s/ (ssssssssss).
  2. While you child is saying the /s/ sound have them pucker their lips slightly and move their tongue back slowly until you hear a good SH sound.

SH from “ee”

  1. Have your child say “ee.” Then have them say “ee” in a whisper with no voice.
  2. While whispering the “ee” sound have your child move their lips into a pucker position. This should result in a SH sound.

Have your child make a good /s/ sound "SSSSSS" or a good "eeeee" sound. You can help shape "sh" from these sounds.

Sh from "ssssss"

1. have your child say "sssssss" a "skinny" air sound

2. While your child is saying the "sssss" sound have them pucker their lips and slightly move the tongue back slowly until you hear a "fat" air sound

SH from "eeee"

1. Have the child say "ee" then have them say "eee" in a whisper with no voice.

2. While whispering the "ee" sound have your child move their lips into a pucker position, this should result in a "sh" sound.

practice saying "sh" correctly until you get 10 good ones in a row

Next practice "sh" in syllables: These are meant to sound funny to be practiced in the beginning, middle and end. There is no right or wrong way to say them as long as "sh" is in the right position (beginning, middle or end)
