3. Strategic Planning for Success

Welcome to Session #3 - Strategic Planning for Success.

Please begin by logging in to this webinar at https://goo.gl/forms/78D3rqGBwbxnNJa32

Welcome to the third in a series of webinars on Technology for Administrators. In this series we have been exploring the challenges and change required to integrate technology. In our first two sessions we discussed the role of the administrator in building teacher capacity and how to create a culture of continuous improvement through communities of practice and autonomous learning that is linked to teacher development. In this session, we will discuss a strategic planning process for integrating technology into your organization.

This is an asynchronous webinar. Watch this short video to learn more about asynchronous webinars and how to engage in this online learning experience. As an autonomous learner, you will be able to select the content you wish to view and proceed at your own speed through the webinar. While it is suggested that you view the content in a linear order, you will be able to decide which information is more applicable to your needs.

1. INTRODUCTION: (1 min, 26 secs.)

Please view the introductory video to the left before advancing through the material. It provides an overview of the webinar and reviews the goals and inquiry questions that you will think about during the webinar. The three themes for the webinar:

* Core beliefs that support technology.

* Stakeholder interests and linkages.

* Technology integration strategies that support the strategic priorities and how to implement them at your school or in your district.

Part 1 - Core Beliefs that Support Technology

We will begin this webinar with some foundational research about technology integration and teacher beliefs. In order to make informed decisions about best practices and implementation it is important to understand teacher perceptions of technology use and how is impacts teaching and learning.

What does the research say about teacher beliefs and technology integration?

The journal of Computers in Education is a reputable source of information and research about how technology is impacting teachers and education. The article selected for this webinar provides contextual information by researchers who are studying teacher beliefs on technology integration.

Read the abstract of the article first. As you read the abstract, identify the themes that relate to your own interests (pedagogical beliefs, classroom technology practices, teacher beliefs and attitudes, barriers) and consider how this information might help you create a technology culture that support teacher beliefs. The full article is available at the bottom of this page as a pdf.

Part 2 - Stakeholder interests and Linkages (Video Lecture #1 - 7 minutes)

In this first of two short video lectures I will describe six recommendations for technology implementation from PowerUP WHAT WORKS from the Center for Technology Implementation (CTI). The six best practice recommendations are the core tasks of your implementation plan. These will guide you through the ongoing, iterative process of planning, implementing, and sustaining technology use to enhance student learning.

Planning for Technology Implementation (Video Lecture #2 - 6 minutes)

In this short video lecture you will review the process for creating a plan for technology implementation and learn about several possible methods used to implement technology. At the end of the video you will be asked to complete a short task to help you determine your needs in preparation for developing your technology implementation plan.

Preparation Task - Prior to engaging in the development of a technology implementation plan, respond to the five questions below. You might consider doing this as an activity with the teachers who will be implementing the technology plan that you will develop. By including the teachers you will demonstrate your desire to build a collaborative process that supports the needs of the stakeholders (teachers, students and administration.)

  1. What technology tools do you have in your school?
  2. How are teachers using these tools?
  3. What approach will be the “best fit” for school-wide technology implementation in your existing school culture?
  4. What would you like to see change or evolve as you implement technology into your school culture?
  5. What teacher and student outcomes will you observe as a result of the implementation of technology?

After completing the task, review the responses you recorded. What do they tell you about your needs for technology implementation? How will you develop your plan to address the needs you identified?

Part 3 - Technology integration strategies that support the strategic priorities

In this final section of the webinar you will be exploring ways to integrate technology practices into classrooms at your school or district. The first video was made with a technology tool called "Adobe Spark" which is a FREE application that is available online or as an app for the iPad. Creating videos with Adobe Spark requires minimal technology knowledge and can usually be accomplished with minimal training. Now, view the short video on Technology Integration. The questions in the video explore how you might use technology in your classrooms.

Edutopia is a tremendously useful site for exploring many topics related to education and teaching. You will find the link to the technology integration pages on Edutopia below. But first, view the video "Introduction to Technology Integration".

Now that you have read about technology integration and learned about the key elements of a technology implementation plan, you can begin the process of determining how to implement technology at your school.
