Goals for this session:
• Reflect on successful practices that are being used to build teacher capacity for technology integration.
• Learn about existing models for technology training and support.
• Strategize about how technology integration can be linked to other key initiatives.

In this second session you will be working independently to learn more about practices that will help your teachers build their capacity to integrate technology into their teaching practice. As you scroll down the page you will notice there are short video lectures and instructional videos to watch that will teach about research based methods to build teacher capacity. They are followed by links to additional resources.
As in Session #1, the instruction is focused around the goals and the inquiry questions listed below. In this format you will be asked to view the videos, read the text selections and reflect on your current and future role in support teachers as they build their capacity to integrate technology.
1. Building teacher capacity for technology integration.
Capacity building (or capacity development) is the process by which individual and organizations obtain, improve, and retain the skills and knowledge needed to do their jobs competently. Capacity building and capacity development are often used interchangeably; however, some people interpret capacity building as not recognizing people's existing capacity whereas capacity development recognizes existing capacities which require improvement.

iSeminars and Mircolearning
Online learning is becoming more prevalent in traditional K-12 classroom environments and teachers need to feel comfortable working and teaching using technology in blended classroom settings. To prepare teachers for this type of teaching, consider the concept of the “iSeminar” as a method of training and professional development.
iSeminars respond to the need for teacher interaction and collaboration bringing teachers together to be immersed in technology based instruction and to engaged in social learning opportunities with their peers. The format of the instruction is blended learning. Teachers view a live or video presentation on the content or topics and then are engaged in both individual and group activities applying the skills that have been learned.
iSeminars are based upon the concept of Microlearning (Hug, 2005). These types of trainings are brief and focused on a central skill or set of skills that can be applied to instructional practices. Teachers are provided with synchronous and asynchronous access to instruction with specific work related tasks through the modeling of iPad or web based technology applications that can be used in classroom teaching. iPad applications are often readily applicabile to educational classroom environments and to content delivery.
Teachers are introduced to apps and web based tools as a means of creating learning opportunities for their students. The structure of the iSeminar can promote collaboration and communication between teachers as they practice using the web based tools and applications. With new and evolving iPad applications, the content of the iSeminar can change or be adapted to the needs of the teachers. A variety of applications like EduCreations, ShowMe, Haiku Deck, iMovie Trailers, Adobe Spark and others are introduced during the iSeminar and integrated into the training session. Teachers can then select the applications that they want to learn and that can be used with their students in the classroom and to develop their own instructional materials as part of their course assignments.
iSeminars allow teachers to form a new mindset around how to engage students and how to deliver technology based instruction. Using iPad apps and web based tools to organize and present academic content makes learning more interesting and relevant for the students. Teaching with technology also helps teachers to build innovation and problem solving skills in their students.

What is Instructional Coaching? How does instructional coaching improve teaching practice? View this video lecture to learn more about the different types of coaching and mentoring methods that support teacher development.
In response to high levels of attrition and declining levels of new teacher job satisfaction, a paradigm shift is needed in the field of teacher development that provides more innovative and supportive training environments for veteran and novice teachers. The most prominent models for inducting new teachers into the profession are on-the-job coaching and mentoring experiences provided by more experienced teachers and university based induction programs with supporting university faculty members.
Training and mentoring models provide that provide coaching and mentoring rely heavily on the expertise of the mentoring teacher or faculty member to guide the novice teachers to higher levels of reflective practice. Retaining highly trained teachers requires the implementation of evidence or research-based practices for training and development. In schools and school districts leaders responsible for new teacher support and mentoring must be able to; 1) identify evidence based strategies and models that will have a positive impact on teaching practices and; 2) implement these approaches with fidelity in teacher support programs.
Effective instructional coaches have an understanding of the elements needed to promote teacher effectiveness. They build strong relationships with their peers and offer continuous forms of support through modeling, demonstration lessons, co-teaching, goal setting and instructional planning. Instructional coaches rely on data to inform decision making practices and use classroom based evidence to inform and to change teaching practices.

Adobe Spark - Technology Integration
Adobe Spark was originally created as Adobe Voice for use on the iPad. It is a simple tool for creating videos that are supported with voice recording, graphics and images. In this example, the video begins with an inquiry question. Adobe Spark is not available online or as an iPad. It requires minimal training time to use and after the videos are created that can be downloaded for teaching or show purposes.

EdCamp - https://www.edcamp.orgAn edcamp is a participant-driven conference - commonly referred to as an "unconference". Edcamps are designed to provide participant-driven professional development for K-12 educators. Edcamps are modeled after BarCamps, free participant-driven conferences with a primary focus on technology and computers. Educational technology is a common topic area for edcamps, as are pedagogy, practical examples in instructional use of modern tools, and solving the problems technology can introduce into the classroom environment. Edcamps are generally free or very low-cost, built around community participation. Sessions are not planned until the day of the event, when participants can volunteer to facilitate a conversation on a topic of their choice or simply choose an idea they are interested in learning more about. Edcamps operate "without keynote speakers or vendor booths, encourage participants to find or lead a conversation that meet their needs and interests." Source – Wikipedia
