Commodore’s Corner July 2017

posted Jul 24, 2017, 7:34 PM by Cape Yacht Club

Hope you got to spend some time out on the water over the weekend and had a fun 4th of July.

The Yacht Club Board members are very excited to debut a new Yacht Club/Youth Sailing Logo!  It is our hope that this design will make the YCCSC acronym more recognizable and bring all of our activities under one consistent banner. It will look pretty good on hats and shirts too!

The new design can be tailored to identify YC/YS specific activities and titles (Youth Sailing, Chili Cook-off Winner, Race Committee, Vice Commodore etc.) simply by trading out EST. 1970.  The longitude and latitude of the Magothy River was added to highlight the wide yellow line in the Burgee.  I recently learned from Jim Klemstine the wide yellow represents the shape of the Magothy.  I will keep you posted on when the new logo gear will be available for purchase.  Melissa Hagan has been invaluable in working up the final designs and getting our new logo print ready. Thank you so much Melissa!

You may have noticed the YCCSC website it having technical difficulties. Luckily the Youth Sailing web page is unaffected. We are currently unable to post anything new.  Any important YC information will be sent via email until the issue is resolved. We are looking into a new format that will better suit our needs as a club. It is my intention that the YCCSC web page will provide the most up-to-date information on Yacht Club activities and Youth Sailing information. You can also friend us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/yachtclubofcapestclaire/

Many thanks to Mike Norton for all the time and effort he has put in working the website issues.

Yacht Club Cape St. Claire is applying for Non-Profit status as a 501(c)(3).  James Bourne has put in countless hours and navigated through a frustrating process to get all the required paperwork together and submitted. We are extremely grateful for all he has done.  This designation will benefit our club and most importantly our Youth Sailing Program in the following:

·         Accept donations from the public

·         Exemption from federal and/or state corporate income taxes

·         Possible exemption from state sales and property taxes (varies by state)

·         Ability to apply for grants and other public or private allocations available only to IRS-recognized, 501(c)(3) organizations

·         Potentially higher thresholds before incurring federal and/or state unemployment tax liabilities

·         The public legitimacy of IRS recognition

·         Flexibility to grow our savings for future purchases of equipment (i.e. new boats)

·         Discounts on US Postal bulk-mail rates and other services

I cannot overstate what a lasting positive impact James’s work will have on our organization, especially the Youth Sailing Program.

If you have been down to Lake Claire Beach recently you will see that the 2017 Youth Sailing Program has begun.  The program continues to be successfully coordinated by a dedicated group of volunteers who put in many, many, many hours. Their dedication to the quality of the program and to the kids who return year after year is what makes this program so special. Congratulations to Irenee McEwee and everyone on the YS Committee for another outstanding job.

The Friday night races so far this season have had great conditions!  Lots of wind has made for some challenging courses. We are looking forward to the annual Youth Sailing night on Friday 7/14.  Sundowner will be the Committee Boat so make a plan to raft-up and cheer on our young sailor’s crewing on the “big” boats! A big Thank You to Phil Ourisson for doing everything that makes all the Friday night races possible.
