The weather conditions for the 2016 Frozen Fat ass 50 K were once again epic. While running in the sand and rocks, thru dunes, march trails and the beach can be difficult enough, being pelted by rain, near freezing temperatures and gale force winds make this one of the hardest mind bending fat ass races out there.
Words cannot adequately describe the feeling of being cold, wet, sore and tired from running 11 or so miles and then leaving the relative comfort and lee of the dunes and marsh trail, turning onto the beach for the final 5 mile leg against sometimes gale force head winds to complete the first 25K. What keeps you going Is, it the way out, and, you have no choice, but you know there is a warm room waiting with your friends, hot soup and chowder at the half way mark. There are some that chose to stop there and a few who chose to go out again. Them’s the real crazy ones!!
After the sometimes torturous experience of running this race, many vow never to return and repeat this and yet they come back, year after year. There is one who has come back for all 10 years of the Frozen Fat Ass 50 K. Has completed the whole thing all 10 years, and that is one FREDERICK MUROLO from CT. Fred’s a special kind of crazy. We love him. Congratualtions!
There were 3 cases of hypothermia which were expertly handled by our highly trained on staff wilderness first aide responders. There was even one runner who completed 25K barefoot and that was yes, you know who, New Bedford’s own-Kevin Mullen. Kevin is also a special kind of crazy and we love him too. Actually we love all those who come out year after year.
So, until next year. Happy trails, keep moving and we will see you in 2017
