Total Depravity -- Since the Fall of Man, when Adam and Eve sinned and were banished from the Garden of Eden, humanity has been unable to choose good over evil. Free will is an illusion; humans can only believe in God and receive salvation by divine intervention [1]. Bible verses that can be used to advance this theory [2]:
"Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin." --John 8:34 (NIV)
"As it is written, 'There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away; they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.'" --Romans 3:10-12 (NIV)
"The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit." --1 Corinthians 2:14 (NIV)
Free Will -- God does not interfere with humanity's free will. He graciously enables each sinner to repent and believe. A lost sinner needs the Holy Spirit's assistance in order to be regenerated, but he or she has to take the initial step by believing [1]. Bible verses that can be used to advance this theory [3]:
"Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own." --John 7:17 (NIV)
"If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord', and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved." --Romans 10:9-10 (NIV)
"No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide you a way out so you can endure it." --1 Corinthians 10:13 (NIV)
