Which of these theological perspectives more closely matches your viewpoint?
Limited Atonement -- As God had already selected which individuals would ultimately accept salvation before the world began, it follows that Jesus only died a substitutionary death for those individuals, rather than all of humanity. The Holy Spirit perfectly grants the gift of faith to those individuals, thus ensuring their salvation [1]. Bible verses that can be used to advance this theory: [2]
"And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that I shall lose none of all those He has given Me, but raise them up at the last day." --John 6:39 (NIV)
"No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day." --John 6:44 (NIV)
"I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those You have given Me, because they are Yours." --John 17:9 (NIV)
General Atonement -- Jesus' death on the cross was necessary to save all of humanity but not sufficient. Salvation depends on an individual's actual belief in Christ. His death allows the pardon of sinners, but faith is required for a sinner to actually be redeemed [1]. Bible verses that can be used to advance this theory: [3]
"And He died for all, that those who live shall no longer live for themselves but for Him who died for them and was raised again." --2 Corinthians 5:15 (NIV)
"But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because He suffered death, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone." --Hebrews 2:9 (NIV)
"He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the entire world." --1 John 2:2 (NIV)
Select either Limited Atonement or General Atonement.
