On Friday, April 11, 2025, CALA NE Chapter hosted our annual conference at Seton Hall University’s Walsh Library in South Orange, New Jersey. The conference theme was “Strengthening our Resiliency and Solidarity in Library and Information Sciences (LIS)”.
The annual meeting started with pre-recorded special remarks by Maria McCauley, ALA President-Elect 2026-27, and short welcome remarks by Yuzhou Bai, current chapter president. This was followed by icebreakers co-facilitated by Jeanie Pai, Amanda He, and Yuzhou Bai. This included poetry, tarot card reading, and talking circle activities. Madellen Garcia and Manny Figueroa, President and Treasurer of the REFORMA Northeast Chapter, joined the meeting this year as our special guests. Breakfast was served, which included homemade baked goods by Sunny Chung, as well as platters from a local café, Jackie & Sons.
We received a tour of the Monsignor Noé Field Archives and Special Collections led by Quinn Christie, Public Services Archivist, and Laura Hapke, Walsh Gallery Collections Manager. The curated selection included on-campus history with Asian American populations, Chinese American history, and Asian art collected by Seton Hall faculty, students, and affiliates. The Northeast chapter was also able to view the newly mounted display of Wang Fangyu’s collection of East Asian art. After a rainy lunch at Bay Leaf, located in downtown South Orange, the group reconvened in Walsh Library for two sessions of thematic lightning talks and separated with a lovely tea break. Homemade Thai tea was brought by chapter vice president, Amanda He, and tea bags were provided by chapter treasurer Jeanie Pai and chapter president Yuzhou Bai. The lightning talk sessions were concluded with closing remarks and networking time, permitting Seton Hall faculty and staff to mingle with CALA Northeast members.
