Stan Lai has been called "the major contemporary Asian playwright of his time, perhaps of all time" (Robert Brustein). Born in the U.S. and raised in both the U.S. and Taiwan, Lai earned his Ph.D. from U.C. Berkeley before launching a groundbreaking career in Taiwan. His 40+ plays are celebrated across the Chinese-speaking world, including A Dream Like a Dream, The Village, and Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land, which are considered masterpieces. He is co-founder of the Wuzhen Theatre Festival and Huichang Theatre Village in China. Theatre Above in Shanghai is a venue dedicated to his oeuvre. His latest book, CREATIVITRY, is a reworking of his iconic Chinese book, Chuangyixue, which has sold over 1 million copies.
From 11 AM - 12 PM, there will be a special reception for CALA members only with Stan Lai, followed by an author talk open to the general public starting at 12 PM.
The author talk will be in English. Dr. Lai is happy to address questions in Chinese as needed. This will be a hybrid event. We highly recommend those who are able to please join us in-person.
Please RSVP here.
Limited copies will be available for purchase (cash, Venmo, or Zelle only).
