The CALA Northeast Chapter is organizing a spring program for CALA members and interested librarians: Visiting Columbia University Libraries, Friday, May, 6th, 2011, 2:30-4:30 pm. We will visit three Columbia University's libraries: the C.V. Starr East Asian Library, the Butler Library, and the Digital Science Center. The CALA Northeast Chapter is organizing a spring program for our members and interested
librarians to visit Columbia University Libraries. The program is on Friday, May, 6th, 2011,
from 2:30-4:30 pm. We will visit three Columbia University's libraries:
C.V. Starr East Asian Library is one of the major collections for the study of East Asia in the United States, with nearly 750,000 volumes of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Tibetan, Mongol, Manchu, and Western-language materials and over 5,000 periodical titles.
Digital Science Center housed in the Science & Engineering Library, fulfills the vision of Columbia Libraries to consolidate and redefine library spaces for the 21st century. Working with the University Science departments, the Libraries have defined a set of services to meet the research and teaching needs of University science programs. It incorporates state-of-the-art technology, high-end software and research data sets for scientific analysis and visualization, and professional, discipline-specific consulting and support.
Butler Library houses 2 million volumes which comprise the University's collections in the humanities. The building also houses the Libraries Information Office, the Rare Book & Manuscripts Library, and the Milstein Undergraduate Library.
The tour of these libraries will be conducted by Columbia University librarians. And two librarians from the East Asian Library (Sarah Elman, and Charlene Zhou) will accompany us throughout the tour. The schedule is as follows:

For those who have registered, please meet 2:30 pm outside of the C.V.Star East Asian Library and we'll go in together, as the entrance to the library is controlled by ID cards.
Since there will be a fair amount of walking, please wear comfortable shoes.

Directions for C.V. Starr East Asian Library:
Enter Columbia Campus from the 116th Street entrance (i.e. College Walk).
By New York City Public Transportation: Five bus lines (M4, M5, M11, M60, M104) and one subway line (the No. 1 local) serve the Columbia neighborhood. The Columbia stop for the buses and the subway is 116th Street. Do not use the Nos. 2 and 3 express subway trains, which follow a different route and do not stop at Columbia University. If you take the No. 2 or 3, transfer at 96th Street to the No. 1 local train.
Follow the red line indicated on the map below--Go up the stairs in front of the Alma Mater statue to the Low Plaza, and then up the stairs to the upper campus. Kent Hall will be on your right and the Library entrance will be right in front of you.
The dotted red line is an alternative route—Continue on the College Walk until you reach Kent Hall. Enter the fist door on the left to enter the Cashier's Office. Turn right and go to the main corridor. Walk up the staircase on your left (1st door in the corridor), or go further down the hall to the elevator and go to the third floor. The library entrance will be right in front of you.

On January 28th, 2011, fifty CALA members and library patrons from the Flushing community braved the cold and snow to attend the CALA/NE Chinese New Year’s Program, Palace Painting of the Qing Dynasty 清代宫廷画, featuring the well-known Chinese artist, Hengyi Aixinjueluo. Attendees had a great time with the artist, colleagues, and friends.

Celebrate the New Year with Friends and Chinese Artist, 爱新觉罗恒懿
The CALA Northeast Chapter (CALA/NE), in collaboration with Flushing Library will host a program to celebrate the New Year, Palace Painting of the Qing Dynasty 清代宫廷画, featuring the well-known Chinese artist, Hengyi Aixinjueluo/爱新觉罗恒懿, a descendant of the royal family of the Qing Dynasty. Come January 28th to the Flushing Library, and celebrate the New Year with friends and colleagues, and learn about Chinese art, in particular, palace painting of the Qing dynasty. Upcoming program featuring famous Chinese Artist, Hengyi Aixinjueluo/爱新觉罗恒懿
爱新觉罗恒懿是著名的中国水墨画艺术家。她是清室公主,清朝最后一位皇帝傅仪的侄孙女. 她的曾 祖是清末端王载漪,祖父曾被慈禧太后 指为大阿哥(皇位继承人).她自幼学习宫廷画,研习并超越了传统 的中国宫廷绘画, 形成了自己独特的艺术风格。爱新觉罗恒懿多次在海内外举办个人画展,作品均受到各国艺术家们的好评.
Hengyi Aixinjueluo is a well-known Chinese artist. She is a descendant of the royal family of the Qing Dynasty, a background that gave her access to the court tradition in painting and opportunities to see famous paintings held in the imperial court at a very early age to lay a good foundation for her artistic talent.

Hengyi Aixinjueluo/爱新觉罗恒懿 will talk about the history of palace painting of the Qing Dynasty, how painters were selected through examinations, ranks of the painters, and will introduce several famous painters, including the Italian painter 郎世宁. She will show many slides of pictures, such as emperors’ portraits, emperors making offerings, and palace parties. It is a great opportunity for the audience to take a glimpse of palace life of the last imperial dynasty of China, and to learn more about Chinese art and painting styles.

On Friday, October 22nd, 2010, CALA Northeast chapter held its first board member meeting after the election of its 2010-2011 officers. The meeting was held from 3:00 - 5:30 PM in New York Mid-Manhattan Library. Invited also to the board meeting were past CALA Northeast chapter presidents, as well as some current CALA officers (see pictures below). The attendees discussed programs ideas for the 2010-2011 year, and made suggestions as to how to effectively reach out to our members and provide better services to our members. Hung-yun Chang, Treasurer of the chapter, reported on CALA/NE finances. Everyone was happy that CALA/NE has a strong balance sheet, which will help the chapter sponsor future programs and events.
Another agenda item discussed at the meeting was the development and maintenance of the CALA Northeast Chapter website. In July 2010, Judy Xiao developed a website for CALA Northeast Chapter. The board members voted unanimously to adopt the website as the official website for CALA/NE, and to elect Judy Xiao as its webmaster.As a result of this meeting, Lina Ding, the chapter President, drafted a timeline for several programs the chapter might be sponsoring:
January 2011, Seminar on Chinese Painting by the famous Chinese American artist, Hengyi Aixinjueluo.
February or March 2011, Members Reunion and Investment Lecture, Visit MoCA, or See a Broadway Show
April 2011, Visit Princeton or Columbia University Library

CALA/NE Chapter members took picture with the guests and Queens Library staff.
As part of the Think Globally, Act Globally project, CALA Northeast chapter, in collaboration with Queens Public Library, Brooklyn Public Library, and New York Public Library hosted four visiting Chinese Library IT managers. On the morning of June 23, 2010, the guests visited Brooklyn Public Library at Grand Army Plaza. Accompanying the guests were CALA Northeast Chapter Vice President, Lina Ding, and past President Maria Fung. After the BPL visit, car service took the visitors back to Flushing, where they had lunch with three CALA Northeast Chapter members.

An afternoon program was held at the Flushing Branch of the Queens Library, where the visitors met with CALA Northeast Chapter members and Queens Library staff, and gave presentations about public library development in China. At 3:30 pm, Fred J. Gitner, Coordinator, New Americans Program & Special Services, Queens Library, and Lina Ding, Vice President of the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) gave opening remarks to welcome the visiting Chinese guests.
Guest speaker Ms. Wu Yue briefly introduced the UIUC-IMLS grant project, and talked about the positive impact this project had in China, followed by presentations by three other guest speakers about public library development in China, specifically, Nanjin Library, Tianjin Library, and Heilongjiang Provincial Library. The guest speakers answered questions from the audience and exchanged ideas with librarians present.
Refreshments were provided by the Brooklyn Public Library in the mornig, and by Queens Library in the afternoon . After the Flushing program, CALA Northeast Chapter board members Lina Ding, Judy Xiao, and Hung-Yun Chang took the guests to dinner. Mr. Change will coordinate guests’ visit to the New York Public Library for June 24 and the evening’s entertainment for a Broadway show before the guests head to Washington D.C. on June 25 for the ALA Annual Conference.

On June 22nd, 2010, four Chinese Librarians visited the Rutgers Univeristy Library in New Brunswick. In the morning, the visitors were accompanied by Rutgers University Librarians on a tour of their digital library, from digitization to the end products. The visitors then jointed the library's cabinet meeting to meet with the library director and associate directors. After the meeting, they were invited for lunch with the cabinet members.
In the afternoon, three of the visitors, Zhou Li, Yue Wu, and Zheng Wu presented their library's projects in front of a group of audience in Alexander Library at Rutgers University Library. The program went very well. It was a good opportunity for librarians from both China and the U.S. to exchange information and ideas about library development and management.
The Rutgers program was coordinated by CALA Northeast Chapter President, Li Sun and CALA Executive Director, Haipeng Li, both of whom work at the Rutgers Univerisity Library.
The visitors returned to NYC, and CALA Northeast Chapter past Presidents, Maria Fung and Songqian Lu hosted them for dinner.

A group of four Chinese library managers are visiting Northeast Chapter. They are in the U.S. as part of the UIUC-CALA IMLS funded librarian exchange program. There are two chances to meet with them, and hear their presentations.
Program Topic: Development of Chinese Libraries: Management, Organization, Issues and Trends
Description: The speakers will address current issues relating to library development in China, including library management, public relations, and issues and trends in Chinese libraries. They will also discuss U.S.-China relations with in the library context.

May 26, 2010. Ms. Pan Lan, a Librarian from Shanghai Normal University, China was invited to meet with CALA Northeast Chapter members, and give a presentation about Shanghai Normal Library. Pan Lan is a participant in a Library Exchange Project that City University of New York (CUNY) librarians are conducting with counterparts at Shanghai Normal University and at Shanghai University, China.
About 40 librarians attended the events. The presentation was followed by a Q&A sessions, and librarians from both sides exchanged information and ideas about academic library development in China and the U.S. At the end of the event, CALA Northeast Chapter Vice President, Lina Ding presented Pan Lan with a Certificate. A dinner was hosted in Pan Lan's honor and joined by many CALA Northeast Chapter members.

The 2010 Joint Mini-Conference titled "Cultural Competencies and Equity of Access: What Today's Librarian will Look Like Tomorrow" was held at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Manhattan on Friday, May 14th, 2010. The Conference was jointed sponsored by: Reforma Northeast Chapter, American Indian Library Association, Chinese American Librarians Association, and Asian Pacific American Librarians Association. Keynote speaker was Dr. Camila Alire, President of American Library Association. There were two panel speakers, among whom 3 were CALA members. Sha Li Zhang, the Immediate Past President of CALA, gave a talk on “Preparing the Librarians with Diverse Backgrounds for Tomorrow: A Collaborative Project in North Carolina.” Judy Xiao, Secretary of CALA Northeast Chapter, gave a presentation on “Teaching Cultural Competence in Nursing Care to Ensure Quality Health Care for ALL,” and Frank Xu presented “Eliminating Language Barriers Towards Equal Access.” The Conference was a big success.

CALA/NE members with visitors, 2009
In summer 2009, as part of the Think Globally, Act Globally project, CALA Northeast chapter hosted Chinese Librarians, Mr Liu Xiaoqing and Mr. Wang Huijun. The librarian visitors spent time in Queens Central Library, Brooklyn Public Library, and Mid-Manhattan Library. Our member volunteers helped arrange their visit, spent time with them and took them sightseeing NYC.
