Just a reminder that we will be having our Card & Game Party on Friday, October 27, 2023, at St. Bernard’s.  We are working on collecting items to go into the raffle baskets.  We are looking for baskets and items to go into baskets like Christmas, Halloween, Italian, Kitchen, Mexican, Coffee, Gardening, Golf, Patriotic, Dog, Cat, Spa, Wine and Bicycling baskets.  If you have any ideas for a basket let me know.  If you have any baskets that are in good shape, we need them.  Unused items that maybe you got as a gift that you want to donate would really be appreciated.  I will be out of town for the month of July but let me know and I will make arrangements to collect them when I return.

Thanks for your support.

THREE ITEMS FOR YOUR ATTENTION.

·       Our Perennials Plant Sale is quickly approaching.  Friday, June 2nd  and Saturday, June 3rd from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm both days.  If you need to add to your landscape, don’t miss this sale.  Plant sales are our major source of fundraising.  Which translates to our U of A Horticulture Scholarships as well as the local Charitable Donations the BVGC makes every year.  Last year we gave $13,500 to our Scholarships and Charitable Donations.  We all should be very proud of this achievement.  I feel that the BVGC has an awesome membership supporting goals that are very impressive.  Thank you to everyone for your hard work.

·       This year is ending with what I anticipate will be a fun June Luncheon.  Julie O’Keefe, one of our great Hospitality Chairs has been working so hard to make the luncheon fun and exciting.  Her creativity is awesome.   Julie has some creative ideas to dress the church up, even an area for photo ops.  Please contact Penny Frahm, kpfrahmslake@midwestinfo.net 479-866-9550 and let her know if you are attending.  I hope you will attend, end my term as President on a fun note and welcome Dory and Jamie as President and Vice President.

·       Last item, I know the fiscal year doesn’t end until June 30th, but it would really help the Treasurer and the Assistant Treasurer in doing their job if you would please pay the $22 dues for 2023-2024 either at the June Luncheon or drop it in the mail before.  As a reminder, if you are unsure if you have paid, please contact Penny to verify before sending her a duplicate payment.

I really look forward to seeing you all at the June Luncheon.

Thanks.

We have been asked by Concordia of Bella Vista Assisted Living to work with some of the residents to plant flowers in their pots for Mother’s Day.  We have 20 residents that we will be working with.  The date set for this event is Wednesday May 10th from 10:00 am until the planting is done, which hopefully shouldn’t take too long if we have enough volunteers to help.

The address is 1 Concordia Drive.  After you turn onto Concordia Drive keep bearing to the right and up the hill and the first building on the right is where we will be.  If you have gloves and little hand spades, please bring them with you.  I will have flowers, dirt and carts at the sight.

Please let me know if you can come and help brighten the residents’ day.

Thanks,

Pat

May 3, 2023

Although our dues are not due until June 15th, please don’t wait to pay your dues, help our Treasurer out with her job.  If you haven’t paid your dues, you won’t be in our next Yearbook.  Since May is our Field Trip there are no more scheduled meetings, please mail you $22 check payable to BVGC to Penny Frahm, 1 McKenzie Drive, Bella Vista, AR 72715.

I hope you will rejoin for the 2023-2024 year.  If you’re not sure if you have paid or not, please either email or call Penny Frahm kpfrahmslake@midwestinfo.net 479-866-9550.

Thanks,

Pat

The Bella Vista Garden Club is growing, and we are so lucky to have many new members who are interested in participating in our activities and learning more about our great club.  I am reaching out to members who have been with the club for a while and would like to be a Mentor to one or more new members.  I plan on becoming a Mentor after my term is over.  There is so much to share with new members and mentoring is a great way to make new friends.

If you are interested in being a Mentor, please contact Marilyn Russell at marbv2014@gmail.com or 479-876-1996.  She will connect you with mentee(s).  Let’s do our best to help make all new members feel welcome and have the best possible experience as part of the Club.

Thanks,

Pa

March 30, 2023

Our Beautification Chair, Jim Richardson, is moving away and leaving the Bella Vista Garden Club.  He will be missed.

The Beautification Committee looks for projects around Bella Vista that the Club can do to add to the beauty of Bella Vista.  Jim has graciously agreed to help a new person take over the Beautification Chair.  If you are interested, please respond to this email and I will help set up a meeting with Jim.

In the past Beautification has done projects like planting 'Bella Vista' Daffodil bulbs around Bella Vista at the fire stations, police station and the Welcome to Bella Vista Signs, planted trees at the Bella Vista Historical Museum and many other projects.

Thanks,

Pat

We have been invited to have a table at the Jane Walmart this Saturday, April 1st to talk about the Bella Vista Garden Club.  They are doing a grand opening of the garden center.  They are starting at 9:00 am.  We are thinking about being there from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm.  I am looking to have about 2 people there for an hour each:

10:00 am to 11:00 am

11:00 am to 12:00 pm

12:00 pm to 1:00 pm

We will have signs about our up coming plant sales, brochures about the BVGC and we are thinking of some little give away like a small cup, some potting soil and seeds for the kids.  If you are able to help, please let me know and what time slot works for you.  Sorry for the short notice but we were just approached today about this event.  I will let everyone know when we have the time slots filled.

Spring has sprung and apparently so have the spring showers.  Originally, we were going to have our first spring cemetery workday tomorrow, but the forecast is for rain.  Looking at the forecast for this week it doesn’t look like there will be a time to get together at the cemetery.  At this time, we are rescheduling for Tuesday, March 28th at 10:00 am.  Please let Mary Doyle at mdoyle57@cox.net know if you will be able to help.  New members, this is a wonderful activity to get to know to a great group of people, work with a group of knowledgeable gardeners and to feel good about giving something back to the community.  Come and join the fun.

Thanks,

This is regarding the Spring Field trip to Moss Mountain Farm.  A new member tried to register for the Field Trip by going online.  As of now, if you try to register online the site will tell you that registration is closed. However she contacted Moss Mountain directly and was told they are holding an additional 8 spots open but you must contact them directly to register.

Attached is the current list of everyone attending.  Please check to see that your name is on the list if planning to attend and verify that your information is listed correctly on the attachment.  If not, contact Dory Hammeke, dehammeke@gmail.com right away.

Please sign up right away before the last 8 spots are taken and please let Dory know that you have signed up.

February 23, 2023

I was incorrect with my previous email about Geri Hoerner wanting to stop doing TLC posts.  Winnie Shanor, who recently passed away,  was responsible for sending cards to the TLC’s posts and that is the position we need to fill.  Geri does the email to the club asking for prayers.  I apologize to Geri and to the club for my mistake.   Please let me know if that is something you would like to take over.

On a separate note, just a reminder that there will be a memorial for Winnie on March 4th at the Cooper Chapel at 1:00 members are invited to attend.

Thanks,

Pat

Februry 22, 2023

I have a couple items that I am needing help with.

1.      Geri Hoerner who has been doing our TLC for the club for a long time would like to pass the torch to another member.  The TLC is a service the club provides to the members where requests for prayers for either a member or their loved ones is posted in their time of need.  Geri would be happy to talk to anyone interested in taking this duty.  Please contact Geri at hoerner72@gmail.com or 479-855-0203.  This is an important function and just requires a computer.  No physical work.  If this sounds like a job for you, please contact Geri.

2.      We have been collecting pop tops for a while now, which we take to Rogers Iron and Metal Corp, where they are weighed and the club receives money,  which we give to the Ronald McDonald Foundation.  Seems like a very worth while endeavor.  I recently took about 30 pounds of pop tops, which gave us $10.50 to give to the Ronal McDonald Foundation.  With the price of gas and the little amount of donation we make I am removing this from our list of endeavors.  For anyone who has been saving their pop tops, many thanks.

Thanks,

Pat

February 1, 2023

Hopefully, everyone is staying safe, warm and off the roads.  I tried every which way I could think to come up with a day and time to reschedule our January Meeting, it is just not going to work.

This email is to bring everyone up to date on things that are going on with the club.  There were only a couple items on the January agenda so I will briefly discuss them in this email instead.

We have set the date for the Card and Game Party, it will be Friday, October 27th.  The location is still to be determined.  Hopefully, I will have that set by our February Meeting.  I will Co-Host the fundraiser with Colleen Walpert.  We have nine months to get things done.  Right now, we would like to start with forming a committee to solicitate donations from businesses for our raffle baskets.  If you are able and willing to be on the committee, please contact me either by email, pmeyer0119@gmail.com or by phone 509-392-3430.  We will then set up a time and place for a meeting to coordinate this process.  If you are not able to help by being on the committee, there are other ways you can help.  If you have items that are new, (i.e., presents you have received that you won’t use) we would be happy to take them.  Please, remember we need items that are new, not used.  Also, if you have baskets that are in good shape that you would like to donate, we would appreciate the donation. Just let me know.  We would like to have the committee formed by the February 22nd Meeting.

Last item was to remind everyone that there is still space for our May Field trip to Moss Mountain.  Please refer to my January Newsletter about the details.  Also, if you have not contacted Dory Hammeke to let her know that you are going, please do so.  Once, we have a final headcount we will look at getting a bus lined up or carpooling.

Thanks for your understanding, look forward to seeing you at the February 22nd Meeting.  Stay safe and warm.

Pat

January 30, 2023

Due to our lovely weather please do not get out on the roads today.  I am cancelling the meeting today. Plus, the Community Church has cancelled as well.  I will be looking at possible other dates and if we can work out everything for rescheduling, I will let everyone know.

So sorry for the inconvenience of this short notice.  Unfortunately, I haven’t learned how to control the weather.  Stay safe.

Pat

January 23, 2023

Steve Brusso has offered to water in the morning on Saturday, October 15th.  Thanks Steve!  Mona & Randy Tate had already offered to water October 11th & 12th.  Thanks Mona & Randy!

I just need Thursday the 13th & Friday the 14th left if anyone wants to water those days.

‍Please help out for just these two days.  I would but I won’t be in town myself.  I am leaving on Wednesday the 12th and won’t be back until the 17th.   Please let Jamie know if you can help.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The Wall of Honor has some construction going on and therefore the sprinklers are not working.  Jamie Hooper the Chair for the Wall of Honor has a favor to ask.  She has a trip coming up and due to our lack of rain she needs people to water at the Wall of Honor for these dates.  Thursday, October 13th, Friday, October 14th and Saturday October 15th.  If you can help out, please contact Jamie by text 405-822-1082 or by email at jhoopkat@yahoo.com.  Jamie will go over what needs to be done and if you need to bring anything.

New members, this is a civic project the Club does at the Wall of Honor.  We maintain the entrance area with flowers, which due to the drought we are having needs to be watered everyday so the plants don’t die.  Usually there are sprinklers that handle the watering, but the Veterans are in the midst of expansion and the sprinklers are off.

Thanks for your help.

Good evening.  Hope everyone has had a great summer.  Our first meeting of the 2022-2023 year is on Wednesday the 28th with social time starting at 9:30. Our scholarship recipients will be there and  Dr. Wendell Hutchens from the U of A will be with the recipients.  Our 2022-2023 Yearbooks will be handed out after the dedication is revealed.  The church will be doing some remodeling in our normal area.  The best doors to come in will be the front doors as you come into the church parking lot.  It will be the doors under the covered drive through area.

This summer the Club received probably 20,000 seed packets.  The seed packets have been gone through for any that we can use to grow plants we sell.  There are both flowers and vegetables.  These seed packets will be on tables as you come in.  Please bring plastic grocery bags and take as many seed packets as possible, for yourself or for family, neighbors and friends.  We would like to see that they get used.

Please also come prepared to pay for any Card Party tickets that you have reserved.  Lucinda Bryant will be collecting and selling tickets for the October 21st Card Party.  Joal Miller will have a sign-up sheet for the food.  Let’s all do as much as we can to support this fundraiser.  Remember the funds collected goes towards scholarships and charitable donations for the Bella Vista Garden Club.

Hope to see you at the meeting.

Bella Vista has two “Welcome to Bella Vista” signs - one going south and one going north on Highway 71, which I am sure everyone has seen.  Jim Richardson, Joal Miller, and I met with the mayor, at his request, to look at the signs and brainstorm on how the Club could make the areas around the signs look beautiful and show our pride in our city.  This will be a joint project with the fire department handling the watering, the city crew will help with their equipment to remove some of the bushes around the signs and our Club members will handle the plantings and upkeep.

Jim Richardson, the chair for the Beautification committee, will spearhead this project.  The work will start sometime in September when the weather cools and Jim will need a committee to accomplish this project.  Please send him a text at 303-668-3269 so he can put you on his contact list.  This is an opportunity for our Club to really shine by showing support for our city and to show that Bella Vista truly is a “Beautiful View”.

Thanks.

The Blue Star Memorial at the Hwy 71 Welcome Center needs some general maintenance, i.e., pruning and raking.  Ray Matkowski is planning a work morning on Thursday August 11th at 7:30 am.

New members:  the Bella Vista Garden Club owns the Blue Star Memorial at the Hwy 71 Welcome Center. Blue Star Memorial Highways are highways in the United States that are marked to pay tribute to the U.S. armed forces.  The National Council of State Garden Clubs, now known as National Garden Clubs, Inc., started the program in 1945 after World War II.  The blue star was used on service flags to denote a service member fighting in the war.  The program has since been expanded to include Memorial Markers and Memorial By-ways (since 1994).  A great way to show support to our armed forces.  Please come and help.  Remember many hands make short work.

Thanks

We hope everyone is staying cool. 😜

Weeds are growing at a fast pace even without rain, so we are scheduling a workday on Thursday, July 21st at 8:00 am.  Weeding will be the top priority, with some dead heading.  Please email mdoyle57@cox.net if you can help.

New members a great opportunity to give back to the community and to work with a great group.  More hands make short work.

Thanks,
