hosted by the Buchanan County Bird Club
The mountains of far Southwestern Virginia were the setting for the 76th Annual Meeting of the Virginia Society of Ornithology. A total of 141 birders attended the weekend event. The guest speaker was Don Kroodsma, authority on birdsong and author of the books, The Singing Life of Birds and Birdsong by the Seasons and Listening to a Continent Sing.
The many hikes scheduled during the weekend yielded 117 species of birds. Highlights included Golden-winged Warblers, Cerulean Warblers, Swainson's Warblers, Blue-winged Warblers, Grasshopper Sparrows, Sora Rail, and American Bittern. A Cape May Warbler in breeding plumage put on a show at Enoch's Branch in Buchanan County.
The Buchanan County Bird Club would like to thank the Virginia Society of Ornithology, Don Kroodsma, and the Breaks Interstate Park for making this a memorable event.
