In 1945, a group of men decided that the young men of Chino needed directions on life and honor. These men were dedicated members of Chino First Methodist church and active members of the Chino community.
In August of 1945, Troop 2 had its official Scoutmaster, Millage Ingran, Ira Mortor, Rev. Lloyd Tabor and George Morgan. Over the years and because of the growth of scouting in the Inland Empire region, troop numbers were reassigned and Troop 2 became Troop 202.
As the years went by, many young boys came to be members of our troop. Some of these scouts worked hard and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. The first Eagle Scout was Stan Tomlinson. Many young men have since followed in his footsteps. We have turned out an Eagle Scout almost every year since the troop’s existence, and we are honored to consistently be adding to our Troop 202 Eagle’s Nest.
Vernon Weeks was a long time Scoutmaster. He served from 1950 until his death in 1964. He was followed by Robert Halstead, Jose Mendoza, Howard Parker, Bill Kline and Jim Crandall. These men served as Scoutmasters for a total period of 8 years. At this point of time, there were about 10 active boys in the troop.
Wes Walston became Scoutmaster in 1972. He remained in this position for 22 years. During this time, the troop grew to around 60 active scouts. A bus and a horse trailer were purchased to take the boys and their gear to outings. The troop prospered and numerous boys earned the rank of Eagle. Many adults, who had joined, stayed on long after their sons had left scouting.
In 1994, when Wes retired, Rocky Trout took on the Scoutmaster position. Rocky had a lifetime of service, over 50 years in scouting. In October, 1995, shortly after celebrating Troop 202’s 50th anniversary, Rocky passed away. A tragic loss to scouting and everyone who knew him.
Upon Rocky’s passing, Jack Sklar accepted the position of Scoutmaster. This temporary position lasted over 2 years. During this time, Jack’s contacts with the Cub Packs, his scouting knowledge, and his rapport with the boys and parents contributed greatly in the rebuilding of the troop.
In February, 1998, Rick Butterworth became the new Scoutmaster. Back in 1995, the council initiated a Cub Scout Enrollment Program, which increased enrollment dramatically. Now, many of those Cub Scouts were crossing over to Boy Scouts. This, in addition to all of Rick’s efforts with the council, recruiting and training standards, brought the number of boys in the Troop to 90.
Mike Riley succeeded Mr. Butterworth in celebrating the 100th anniversary of Boy Scouts and maintained the excellence that has been a tradition in Troop 202 since its beginnings. In 2013, Del Lee stepped in as Scoutmaster. He served the troop well by growing young Scouts into leaders and young men of character until stepping down at the beginning of 2018.
Our current Scoutmaster is David Ballard.
