For reference, this is the STEM program:
http://www.scouting.org/stem/AboutSTEM.aspx
and the requirements for the Cub Scout (Wolves and Bears) and Webelos are here:
http://www.scouting.org/stem/Awards/CubScout.aspx
http://www.scouting.org/stem/Awards/Webelos.aspx
These are some of the items that we discussed at the information meeting:
1. For the most part this is an "at your own pace" program. Scouts can go at their own pace to complete the requurements and parents can check off their work - except for where it's required that the Scout meet with, demonstrate to, or discuss with the Counselor/Mentor. If a Scout completes a belt loop, Sport and Academic pin, Webelos badge, etc. then just check them off in ScoutTrack or let me or your Den Leader know and we'll check them off in ScoutTrack.
2. We'll meet once a month to track progress, meet with the Counselor/Mentor, and complete some of the requirements that overlap between Cub Scouts and Webelos and can be done in the group environment. The meetings during the summer will occur during the day/time that we would be having a Pack Meeting: 3rd Wednesday of July and August at 7:00. I'll post the meeting in the ScoutTrack calendar and I'll add the details about each meeting. When the Pack Meetings restart in the fall we'll meet at 6:00 PM prior to each Pack Meeting.
3. Other than getting the requirements complete before the Cub Scout becomes a Webleos or the Webelos crosses over into Boy Scouts there is no time requirement. Cub Scouts become Webelos on June 1 of their Bear year and Weblos crossover to Boy Scouts in February of their Webelos II year.
4. By all means whatever the boys do for school or other non-Scout activities will certainly count towards their STEM awards.
5. We'll be putting together fields trips to accomplish some of the STEM award requirements. If you have an idea for a field trip that applies to STEM please let us know.
6. This program is open to all Cub Scouts (Wolves and Bears) and Webelos. Tiger Scouts will need to wait until they become a Wolf Cub Scout. There's no official "sign up" so boys can start this at any time.
