2. How do I select a chapter?

Find a chapter or two located in your city or county. Contact a member of each group through the NSDAR website and plan to attend a few meetings. When you find a group in which you feel comfortable and desire to join, request that someone help you complete your genealogical papers for submission to the National Society.

3. Is DAR a secret society?

DAR is not a secret society. Most monthly chapter meetings are open, and visitors are welcome to attend. Annual business meetings are for members only.

4. What cost is involved in becoming a member?

An application fee covers the processing of your papers and review of the genealogical information. Dues vary from state to state and chapter to chapter.

5. How often does a chapter meet? What elements compose a typical meeting?

Schedules vary from chapter to chapter. We meet each month, with the exception of winter (January & February) and the summer (July & August). Meetings include ritual: Pledge to the flag, American’s Creed, and a devotional. A national defense report is shared, and the President General’s Message is read. A program on history, preservation, national defense, education, etc. is presented, and a business meeting follows. Meetings often include a luncheon or refreshments.
