Now tutoring virtually and in Courtenay, BC (I'M CURRENTLY NOT TAKING NEW STUDENTS)
Intermediate Algorithms On Top of a Full-Time job
Thank you, Bruce, for supporting me in finishing my last course for my Bachelors of Computer Science Degree, Computer Algorithms CPSC 320 at UBC. Thank you for supporting the flexible durations and being able to offer in-person and virtual tutoring. Can't believe I'm your first all virtual tutoring! I haven't had tutoring for a while and you were pretty awesome in running with my impromptu requests to review sample practice exams and homework assignments. I found the videos of the tutorials and setting me up with recurring review exercises was the perfect compliment to your live sessions. Thanks for the personal email reminders to review the sessions as well, this helped me stay on track to succeed even with my busy schedule. My only feedback is to allow for regularly timed retrospectives so that I can review and adjust my studying style or to for me to provide you feedback. I will definitely return for more tutoring and refer you to my friends.

Getting Started with Computer Science
"Working with Bruce has helped me to take my first steps in learning computer science. As a beginner it is always very intimidating in the first stages of learning- Bruce helped guide me through all the basics and helped me get past this anxious hurdle of starting something new. Through his convenient and comfortable working space- with an amazing multi-screen set up, I was able to focus on the material and master some computer science programming techniques. After my sessions I even got a study schedule to keep me on track in my work! If your looking to get started in a new subject or your just need a few tips I would recommend using Bruce's help to get you where you want to be!"
-Amy Langereis, Langara computer science student (web programming), Summer 2016
Studying Actively and Deliberately
"Bruce did a really good job getting me to learn tough concepts by getting me to explain them on my own and by getting me to regularly review the material. My most effective study time was when I was working with Bruce one on one"
- Michelle W., UBC CPSC 320 Student (Algorithms), Summer 2016
Building an Intuition
"I passed the math course and scored about 78% on the final exam. So I'm happy with my results and I want to thank you for all your help."
- Vishav, First Year Calculus Student, Fall 2011
Bruce's Comment: Vishav worked very hard, but was borderline failing. We worked together regularly for about 3 weeks before his exam. We modified Vishav's approach to studying mathematics and started to build his intuition. While still inconsistent, by the exam Vishav was at times demonstrating an excellent grasp of the material.
Starting from Scratch, Ending with an A
"I just got my results back today in fact, and I got a grade of 82% on the final. My final mark in the course is 81%! I'm very pleased with the results and can't thank you enough for your help. I wouldn't have been able to reach this goal without you."
- Ben - Distance Education Linear Algebra Student
Bruce's Comment: Ben hadn't taken any math courses for years and had to take this full-fledged Linear Algebra course in order to graduate. With an immense effort and support only from me and the Khan Academy when he got stuck, hour by hour and concept by concept Ben learned the course material and filled in the gaps of his mathematics background. We worked 35 hours together, and this was only a fraction of his total study time. His grades certainly reflect his dedication and commitment!
Project Management Emergency
"Without Bruce's tutoring I don't think I would have passed. Bruce's explanations helped me integrate understanding in class because math is not my subject at all. Even when I was frustrated with myself, Bruce was very patient with me and I appreciated that."
- Diane, UBC Intensive Project Management Student, Fall 2011
Bruce's Comment: Diane just needed to get through her course, and the math aspect was not her interest or strength. We got her through it with less suffering than would otherwise have been the case.
Emergency Google Translation
"I was afraid I might fail the course, but after a few sessions with you, I passed the course with a satisfying grade. Thank you, Bruce."
- Anonymous - Math 307 (Linear Algebra) Student
Bruce's Comment: This student's course had lots of great theory based on Google's search algorithm (which was new to me as well). We had only a few sessions before to her exam, and as we solved problems together I translated this theory into the practical understanding and know-how she needed to solve problems. Then I asked her to explain it back to me so I knew where she still needed help.
