About Us
Dear Fellow Gardener
We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Broughton Allotment Association website and to wish you a good growing season (weather permitting!!!). Whether you are a seasoned gardener or novice, we think you will find us a friendly and helpful bunch.
Broughton Allotment Association was formed in 2007 with the aim of creating a community based organisation representing the interests of fellow plot holders & local gardeners. It is run solely by volunteers from the allotment, via the election of a committee at the AGM held each October, which is quite well attended. The association has links with the Broughton Junior School, which keep a well-attended half plot (39A). The school children are regularly seen walking, talking, tending, planting and watering the plot with teachers & leaders in tow. It is a joy to watch them all busy and eager to get the jobs done. We have a close working relationship with Broughton Town Council and have regular meetings with them, usually every couple of months.
Over the years the Association has organised fundraising and social events. For example, coffee mornings at the Village Hall, demonstrations of Chinese Cookery using some produce from the plots, an open day at the allotments during National Allotment Week and a visit to Uncle Henry's walled kitchen garden (with coffee and cake to finish). A good time was had by all!
Membership of the Association only costs £1 per person, and has done since the start of the Association and, for this year only, will run from January 2012 to March 2013. Certain discounts are negotiated with some local garden centres on some of their products - details of which can be obtained from any member of the committee.
The cabin can used by one and all - shelter, sit and chat or read the gardening books & magazines (although well-thumbed). We have a seed scheme with Van Hage offering discounted prices and which is run by a committee member. Catalogues can be found in the cabin, usually by late Autumn/early Winter. The white board and notice boards can be used to advertise useful items that you need, or no longer require but someone else may appreciate and use - the discussion group for Broughton Allotments is another way to bring these items to people's attention. The committee hold their monthly meetings in there [circumstances permitting - it may be more acceptable to adjourn to the Thatch]. Feel free to offer other ideas for the use of the porta-cabin.
Manure can be obtained, by the trailer load, or go halves with your allotment neighbour. The gentleman on Plot 1 will organise it if you require any.
Thanks for visiting our pages and once again we wish a happy growing season. have fun and enjoy the experience of eating what nature intended (funny shaped vegetables to the fore :)
From the committee of Broughton Allotment Association.
