East Brunswick - Lack of consultation on inappropriate construction

[ The short link to this page is http://bit.ly/morelanddueprocess ]

We are residents of East Brunswick who are appalled at the lack of due process in the planning for several thousand new dwellings. Within a kilometre of our streets there are planned to be several thousand new residences in blocks of six storey buildings, and a new shopping centre the same size as Barkly Square. How will the roads cope with the extra traffic, and what kind of neighbourhood is being dropped on us with little or no scope for our meaningful input?

This map is a little out of date now, and there are probably several hundred new dwellings that are not listed here. View Commercial residential development sites in and around Brunswick East & West (South Ward) in a larger map

Council has not enforced any consultation process and, funny enough, it spends more effort on getting approval for a one-storey house extension than it does for any of these new constructions.

The 'developers' - the companies who want to make quick money and then move on - have no interest in what impact their buildings have on the local community. The Council and the State Government used to look after their constituents, but that no longer seems to be the case.

We want our elected representatives to represent us!

We want all of the present proposed building projects to be placed back into the first stages of consultation, with proper notices provided to all residents and sufficient time for meetings and planning to proceed.

We want the new construction to be in tune with the local community.

We request that Council postpone consideration of Amendment C92 and the proposed DPO 11 until there is:

1) a process to enable fully informed and meaningful consultation with the local community and traders affected by the proposed development (and its facilitation through use of a DPO)

2) a commitment from Council to reflect the views of the community in any decisions taken

3) a commitment to ensure that development in Brunswick is consistent with the Brunswick Structure Plan, existing Moreland Planning Policy and normal processes of notice, objection and review.

The purpose of this request is to achieve better outcomes for both current and future East Brunswick residents and to ensure that development is well-integrated into the existing community.
