CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
Nick Bottom (M) – The main protagonist, a struggling Renaissance playwright desperate to outdo William Shakespeare. Ambitious, jealous, and determined, Nick is often clueless in his pursuit of fame but deeply loves his family. He is responsible for creating the first musical, "Omelette," and requires a comedic actor with
strong singing and tap-dancing skills (baritone)
Nigel Bottom (M)– Nick’s sweet, naive younger brother and a talented poet. Initially lacking confidence, Nigel gains self-assurance through his love for Portia and his artistic pursuits. He represents the more innocent, artistic side of theater and requires a high baritone/tenor with strong comedic and singing abilities
Bea (F)– Nick’s resourceful and supportive wife. She is intelligent, persuasive, and often dresses as a male to support her family. Bea is a strong leader who ultimately helps save the day, requiring a performer capable of comedic timing and strong stage presence
William Shakespeare (M) – Portrayed as a Renaissance rock star, egotistical and flashy, Shakespeare is Nick and Nigel’s rival. He is charming, arrogant, and full of swagger, performing his sonnets as rock songs. The role requires a comedic actor with a rock tenor voice and tap-dancing skills
Thomas or Madonna Nostradamus (M or F)– A soothsayer who predicts the future of theater, slightly loony and mysterious. They inspire Nick to create the first musical and requires a strong singer and dancer with quirky character abilities
Portia (F) – The daughter of Brother Jeremiah and Nigel’s love interest. Passionate about poetry and literature despite Puritan restrictions, she inspires Nigel’s confidence and creativity. The role requires a performer who can convey sincerity and charm
Brother Jeremiah (M) – A strict Puritan and Portia’s father. He disapproves of theater and sees sin everywhere, especially in Nick and Nigel’s troupe. The role demands a strong character actor capable of comedic rigidity
The Minstrel (M or F) – Opens the show, welcoming the audience to the Renaissance era. Requires strong singing, and tap-dancing skills
Lord or Lady Clapham (M or F)- A posh patron of the theater, non singing but also in ensemble
Shylock (M)- An investor to which Nick and Nigel are in debt, non singing but also in ensemble
Ensemble – Includes various townspeople, dancers, and performers who participate in large musical numbers, supporting the comedic and narrative flow of the show such as Bard Boys, Bard Babes, artists and great writers of the renaissance.
