Selected Pubs

These pubs are either great in their own right, handy for historical locations, or both. The majority serve food. All are highly recommended. Though the decor and comfort varies from basic to downright posh.

Berkeley Arms, Tewkesbury. Rather basic, but wonderful.

Church Inn, Chelmorton. I adore this excellent pub, which is just down the road from the equally excellent High Peak Bookstore. (I should mention that the book shop also has a cafe. Great day out!)

The Falcon Inn, Fotheringhay Rather posh. Constance herself would not look down her nose at this one.

The Riverside at Aymestry. Quite handy for Ludlow.

Swan With Two Necks, Pendleton Close to Clitheroe, and not far from Skipton; this pub is near Pendle Hill (of witches fame). It is absolutely excellent, but rather small, so if you want a table for a meal, advance booking is recommended.

The Tempest Arms, Elslack. Very close to Skipton and within easy driving distance of Middleham. Great place to stay, albeit somewhat 'lived-in'.

Three Chimneys, Biddenden. An all-time favourite. Just down the road from Sissinghurst, not far from Bodiam Castle - in a car, that is.

Three Kings, Hanley Castle. A quiet pub with good beer and cider. Sadly, they no longer do food.

The Three Tuns, Bishop's Castle. Set in the Marches, a little SW of Shrewsbury, this pub has its own brewery. Handy for Stokesay Castle, but could be on your way to/from Ludlow, Hay, or Hereford.

The Top Brink, near Todmorden Set high above Todmorden, and slightly hard to find down narrow roads, but well worth the effort. Outstanding choice of food.

The Pack Horse, Widdop Remote pub on the edge of Bronte Country. Absolutely superb food and beer. Check opening times. Near to the interesting village of Heptonstall.
