The 2020 Boston Massacre was held digitally due to the Coronavirus emergency. Rather than crowding into a hotel ballroom for a weekend, 59 players crowded into a Discord server and played two rounds of Diplomacy over a Saturday. Games were played on the Backstabbr interface, and negotiations were done via individual Discord rooms on the aforementioned server. All of which, though it doesn't perfectly replicate the conditions of a face-to-face game, sufficed for our purposes. Additionally, the 59 players attending made this the largest Boston Massacre ever, and the vast majority were first-time Massacre attendees. We had some faces familiar to the face-to-face crowd, but a significant influx of primarily online players as well; for many of these, Massacre was their first real-time tournament, and we hope this experience will encourage them to join us at future face-to-face tournaments, and specifically face-to-face Boston Massacre!
After two rounds of play, Tanya Gill (until recently, an online player herself) emerged triumphant, having soloed in the first round. The full results, including Best Countries and other awards, are below.
