1914 Aug 4th seized at Hamburg and her crew interned at Ruhleben where her master Capt. T. A. French died.

Fitted out as a blockade runner and loaded with guns and ammunition for the German East Africa colonies to supply the German cruiser Konigsberg.

1915 April 4th blockaded in the Rufiji River and intercepted off the African coast at Mansa Bay by HMS Hyacinth.

Hyacinth's starboard engine broke down for a period allowing Rubens to escape only to be set alight (scuttled) by her German crew to avoid capture once Hyacinth re-engaged.

Location 4°56'25"S 39° 8'28"E

Hyacinth subsequently withdrew and the supplies located in Rubens flooded hold were salvaged.
