Some of the more important recent projects at BlackWalnut Gardens include :
(As with many of our endeavours the following has no charge.)
We are very excited to have completed work on our Seniors' Garden Library. This " little cottage" in the gardens is a getaway with cozy seating, a tea table, windows onto the lovely flowers, and bookcases filled with rotating kinds of books suited to the seniors who are visiting for the morning or afternoon. One morning of the week little children are guests to listen to stories read by seniors. Other times it is a cozy respite and getaway where seniors can peacefully read to themselves and when requested we read to them.
Our marvelous Fragrant Tactile Garden for the Visually Challenged, and Others continues to be a very special garden offering. Almost an acre in size with special seating and informed pathways, it includes raised tables, a tactile game room, water fountain lounge, and many complex fragrant, tactile, and even edible zones to enjoy. With the professional expertise and input of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind and other organizations who deal with the sight challenged, it is an ever evolving achievement.
SENIORS & YOUTH..... A POWERFUL FORCE - Black Walnut Gardens has been hosting some unique inter-generational activities in the gardens with seniors and young people - which include mentoring, shared garden experiences, and heritage story archiving.
Black Walnut Gardens had its book launch of "Fragrant Tactile Gardens, a sensory notion" at Canada Blooms. This lovely book offers insight into the essence of such a garden and how it evolves. Included are descriptions of similar gardens around the world as well as photos and poetic commentary.
RAISED BEDS & SYMPHONIES
