Botanical Taxonomy

I have a long term interest in Western Australia's unique flora.

  • undertaking taxonomic research into the genus Eremophila.

  • Since 1997 Andrew Brown and myself have been studying this genus with the ultimate aim of publishing a book. This was achieved in 2011 with the publication of "A Field Guide to the Eremophilas of Western Australia". During the last 16 years we have discovered and been shown a number of taxa that are new to science. We have subsequently named a couple of these - Eremophila grandiflora and E. densiflora subsp. erecta (Brown and Buirchell (2007)). Currently we recognise about 50 new taxa which are good species and a large number of subspecies in complexes like E. platycalyx, E. latrobei, E. glabra, E. forrestii and E. clarkei. Over the next few years we will be working our way through these taxa to describe and name them so everyone else becomes aware of their existence.

  • publication of articles, books etc that highlight the beauty and uniqueness of the Western Australian flora

  • conservation of native flora through research, education and lobbying
