The Sound Designer works with the director to create the world of the play by adding sound effects or underscoring as needed for a production. This helps to create the location of the actors or adding to the mood of the scene. They are responsible for acquiring these sound effects by either recording, finding prerecorded, or by amplifying live sound effects (folley). They are responsible for setting up these effects in the board and working with the Engineer to adjust the levels of the effects, actor's microphones, and any live instruments to create a balanced sound.
Stage Crew uses QLab software to playback any sound effects or musical underscoring. Here are some documents, introduction, and tutorials to get you started learning this software. Qlab is not an editing program for sound effects- to edit tracks we use Audacity
Audacity is one example of software that you can use to record, edit, and manipulate audio files. It is free to download so I recommend that you download the software so you can work with it as you go through the tutorials. The tutorials mostly talk about voice overs but you can also record music, import music tracks, or sound effects to manipulate. Try experimenting with the different effects to see what happens- there are many ways to manipulate your audio files and playing around with the tracks is the best way to figure out how everything works!
As previously mentioned we use an Allen & Heath iLive system int he auditorium. The control surface we have is the T112, which is connected to an iDR-48 Mix Rack. Please view the training videos below to learn how to operate the iLive System as the designer needs to know what the board can do and how to use it to get the sound quality they are going for.
