The Master Elecrician helps implement the lighting plot for the lighting designer. They are in charge of the electricians, organizing them to focus all the lighting instruments for each show, before each performance they also work with the board operator to check each light that is used to make sure the lamp is working, the gel hasn't burned through the color, and that the instrument itself is still focused where the lighting designer wanted during focus. They are responsible for making sure the instruments are working properly, the cables are neatly coiled, and plugs are labeled along with the rest of their team. It is their job to make sure everything in the booth and understage where the lighting team has storage is organized.
The following is a very detailed description and process the Master Electrician would go through in theater. At BPHS we use a house rep plot which means most of the lighting instruments stay where they are and some the focus changes depending on the needs to the show. Also, since our productions have shorter runs than university or professional runs would be so there is not as much paperwork that gets generated. So watch the video to see what the full position would be and take notes on things that are useful to our space. Note the job during hang, focus, tech, performances, & strike in particular.
We use an ETC Ion as our lighting console. The Ion is part of the Eos Family of consoles. Please view the training videos below to learn how to operate and program the Ion. You can also view the level 1 and level 2 training documents as well as the Ion Cheat Sheet, Eos Family Effects ,and Eos Family Hardware documents. The links to these are on every page for lighting as it is important for everyone in the lighting department to understand what the board can do and how to get the board to work with the lighting instruments to get the effect that the director/designer wants.
