Bonfire & Fireworks 2018

Dear BMCSC member,

A brief note on the recent Fireworks night staged through the efforts of many members from all the sections. The event was attended by over a thousand people who by all accounts had a good time enjoying the Fireworks and being roasted by the bonfire. Their enjoyment was down to the efforts of the volunteers from Bowls, Cricket, Tennis, Men’s + Ladies + Juniors Hockey, from the popular burgers, the delicious hot pork rolls and high profit margin hot dogs to the well run bar, with soft drinks and sweets to make sure no-one lacked for sugar.

Attendance was down as reflected in gate takings and other sales, nevertheless some £7500 was raised which is a significant contribution to the Club’s finances, particularly as for once it does not come out your pockets or friends/family. This sum is also important when applying for grants, demonstrating that we are active ourselves. Those who came had a good time in a well-managed environment starting at the polite but firm gate staff, continuing with the marshals for fireworks/bonfire. Our one drama of the night was where some dead wood in the big tree did start smouldering, but the bonfire guardians dealt with it. The first aiders were not called into action, and the security staff had no action to speak of.

A special mention to Richard Taylor who not only kindly donated the burgers + pork, but gave us his time and that of family members to work at the burger barn, which was also his! Thanks again to Roger Carter who provided much of the bonfire material i.e. the pure wood and for getting a digger in to pile it high.

It was great to see all the sections pulling together with members aged 7 to 80+ getting stuck in to lay on this event. Well done all of you, and thank you for your gift of time, money, resources and know-how.

We are a small, friendly, Crown Green Bowls Club. In 2019 the Club will again be running   eleven teams  (3 Ladies, 2 Men's and 6 Mixed), four in leagues run by the South Derbyshire Association and seven with the Belper and Mid-Derbyshire Association. There is a programme of club competitions, and organised social bowling and social events. New members are always welcome, whether they wish to be involved in club teams or only in social bowling. Members can use the green whenever there is no match on it.

Over the winter months, the club enters teams in several indoor leagues at the Alfreton Bowls Centre and  organises club social bowling sessions.

The Club, founded in 1880, has been a member of the Derbyshire County Cricket League for the last 25 years, and in 2017 will field  three Senior Teams  in the League. The newly formed Third XI is a development team looking to bridge the gap between Junior Cricket and the longer form of Senior Cricket.

We also run a thriving Junior Section with seven teams  playing in the Notts & Derbys Youth Cricket League, from Under 11 (soft & hardball cricket) to Under 17. Between May and Mid-July there is normally a Junior game on four evenings out of five, with the fifth evening being used for training.

We are a friendly Club, with 3 Floodlit hard courts and 2 Grass courts; new members, both Juniors and Adults, of any standard of play, are welcome to join us. We have a good coaching team and we hold regular coaching sessions for Juniors. Adult Coaching is on Monday night for those that wish to improve their standards. Our Adult Club nights are Tuesdays and Thursdays start at 7pm and we play in all weathers throughout the year.
We have  6 teams  which play in the Derby Summer League and 4 teams in the Winter League. We have several social arrangements during the year including Tournaments
