E-Board Positions
These are the positions on our executive board, elected at our first house meeting every semester. New bayitniks are highly encouraged to read this list and consider running for a role! E-board members have reduced cleaning responsibilities (Toranut) to compensate for their increased contributions to the house. All board members also attend a weekly meeting that is scheduled at the beginning of the semester.
Internal Manager
Leads e-board and house meetings
Supervises all board members
Guides group decision-making
Supports house members on interpersonal issues and manages house dynamics
This role is good for someone who is timely, thorough, a strong leader, able to stay unbiased, composed, and respectful. This is the only role on the e-board that is not open to new Bayitniks.
External Manager
Coordinates with Columbia facilities, maintenance and housing.
Manages move-ins (including getting memoranda signed), move-outs, and keys.
This role is good for someone who is a good communicator, can be available at any time, and has a professional attitude.
Kitchen Manager ("Instacart")
Works with financial manager to establish weekly food budget
Orders all food, including special requests and dinner requests
Helps facilitate food needs for Holidays, including Passover
This role is good for someone who is organized, timely, self-motivated, understands how to work with a budget, can take criticism, and is responsive to the voice of the house.
Inventory
Tracks the inventory of the kitchen
Helps honor special requests
Supervises the "shoppers" that unload and catalog all delivered food from Costco and Fairway Market.
This role is good for someone who wants a consistent schedule, is organized, can communicate well with others, and likes work with others.
Toranut Coordinator
Establishes weekly chore rotation and communicates it to the house
Checks on completed chores
Responsible for the overall cleanliness of the house
This role is good for someone who is organized, timely, diligent, clean, and able to have tough conversations with people or be the "bad guy" from time to time.
Meals Coordinator
Organizes dinner schedule ensuring dietary accommodations and meal diversity
Sets meal preparation guidelines, meal times, and cleanliness standards
This role is good for someone who is organized, loves to use WhatsApp, is comfortable in the kitchen, and is competent with dietary restrictions.
Social Coordinator
Plan social programs for the house and for the broader community
Organize and host all events, leading set-up and clean-up
Run the house social media accounts
This role is good for someone who is enthusiastic, social, has good follow-through, is creative, and is accessible to others.
Financial Manager
Manages the house budget and collects Kuppah.
Controls the Bayit venmo, bank account, and debit card.
Communicates with the e-board and house members about all expenses
Responsible for approving and reimbursing Bayit members for miscellaneous out-of-pocket expenses on the house's behalf.
Responsible for collecting and enforcing any fines.
Leads the process of dispersing our durable goods funds, which help us buy new dishware and other supplies for the house.
This role is good for someone who is very well-organized, knows how to handle discussions about money and keep them confidential, can state their ground in difficult situations, and is comfortable using (or learning to use) Excel or other accounting software.
Religious Coordinator
Keeps our Bayit Kosher and resolves all issues over Kashrut.
Kashers unkosher dishes and tovels new dishes.
Gives an orientation to the kitchen as well as house policies regarding kashrut and shabbat at the beginning of the semester and as needed.
Responsible for answering any and all religious questions regarding house policy.
Makes preparations for shabbos (i.e. setting lights, turning on food warmers, filling hot water urns etc.).
This role is good for someone that has a working knowledge of Jewish religious law, likes to ask and answer questions, and is committed to pluralism in the house.
Bayit Recruiters (2)
Advertise the Bayit to the Jewish community
Survey the Bayit to assess the number of vacancies for the next semester
Organize application and interview process
Run voting meetings to decide on new house members
This role is good for someone who has an interesting social circle, understands house dynamics, and is a great communicator.
**Shoppers (3)
Unpack all groceries, puts away in proper place in fridge/freezer, and separates out dinner orders.
This role is good for someone who likes the consistency of doing the same job every week (because it fully replaces Toranut responsibilities) and can comfortably lift and carry 20-30 pounds.
**Bagels and Mail
Buys kosher bagels every Sunday by 10 a.m. for the whole house
Sorts Bayit mail daily
This role is good for someone who is an early riser on weekends and is a good communicator with the financial manager.
** non-E-board positions, which entirely exempt the holder from Toranut responsibilities.
