Support Form

We/I _____________________________ recommend the Town move forward on the Minuteman Bikeway Extension. This rail trail is an unique recreational and 'active' transportation resource for the Town. Developing it to its full potential will:

- Support the Safe Routes To School Program initiated in Bedford, 2009

- Extend the current Minuteman Bikeway to West Bedford thereby linking neighborhoods containing 3 schools, Town Center, a sports arena, Bedford Farmers Market, commercial and residential areas, numerous sports fields, Great Meadows Wildlife Area,

- Provide those that work, study, play, or commute through or in Bedford a healthy alternative to automobile travel.

In addition, we recommend a surface that supports the widest range of users and is the most cost effective. Given the budget constraints the Town is facing, the surface should be durable and easy to maintain.

Comparing cost, durability, weather resistance, users, and containment of toxins*:

    • Maintenance costs (over 12 years)
      • Asphalt $20K
      • Stone Dust $222K
      • Stabilized Soil $175K
  • Durability
      • Asphalt: most durable
  • Weather Resistance
      • Asphalt: most resistant
  • Users
      • Asphalt: supports the widest range of users
  • Containment of residual rail bed toxins
      • "The more stable the surface, the more competent the containment."

* "Trail Surface Comparison" study funded by the Town comparing asphalt, stone dust, stabilized soil, and gravel surfaces.
