On Friday 27th July, eight members of the Queen’s Own Yeomanry (QOY) deployed to Capel Curig, North Wales to conduct a weekend of mountaineering over the Snowdonia mountain range. The team consisted of three mountaineering instructors and the remainder being novices.

Arriving at Capel Curig late Friday night, the group found the camp to be a hive of activity demonstrating the popularity of Snowdonia and the range of activities that are on offer to cater for all tastes.

Saturday saw an early morning rise for the team on a typically rainy Welsh morning, arriving at the drop-off point the team set off on the day’s trails, the five novices took in the fantastic sights of the mountains around them blissfully unaware of the size of the task that lay ahead.

With high winds and driving rain hammering into the faces of the team the mountains seemed indomitable, but with the first peak reached and the sun finally making an appearance spirits remained high. Along the route, the team bonded with one another as many had either not met before or were new to the regiment.

Well past midday the team reached its highest and final peak of the day, ensuring time was spared for a quick photograph with the regimental flag on full display. With the objective of the day complete, the team set off for the pickup point far off in the distance.

The team stopped off in a nearby village on the return to camp for some well-deserved rest and quality food.

The expedition had proved to be both challenging and fun for all, the team are very grateful for the support of the QOY and all the staff who helped make the expedition possible. The five novices now have an understanding of how difficult and arduous mountaineering can be especially with the weather against you. Undeterred two of the five novices are now looking to complete mountaineering courses within the year.
