I love bringing New Zealand history stories to life for kiwi kids. I choose stories with lots of action to hold the boys attention, and strong role models.
What I like about 'Battle at the Gate' is the way it changes from fast and furious to quiet and gentle, yet with gripping tension throughout. It keeps the kids on the edge of their seats.
I love reading it to a class for the first time. The children listen intently, and when I'm finished, they ask lots of questions.
Adults enjoy it as much as the children. It changes their view of history a little, in a very positive way.
I'd love this story to help us move towards racial harmony in New Zealand. That's one of my dreams.
