About Barbara Graham

Barbara Graham was born in Dunedin. She usually works in series and exhibits her prints extensively throughout New Zealand.

Her early works were multiplate etchings freely interpreting trees, skies, seascapes and landforms. The Space Odyssey series was the first of three inspired by the photographs taken by orbiting weather satellites. The following Structure Series comprised a set of seven etchings which depicted parts of massive historic or modern buildings. Seen from a low viewpoint, the structures seemed to tower dramatically into the sky.

More recently Graham has experimented in dry point techniques on acetate film and with the juxtaposition of images. She has also completed a series of solar plate images. Over the years, Graham has ensured the distinctiveness of her prints by the use of separate plates, the working over of some prints with pastel or graphite and the use of collage.

She has participated in numerous group exhibitions throughout New Zealand and overseas. She has won and received merits in several art awards including the IBM Art Award, Avenue One Interior Awards and the Kochi International Triennial Exhibition of prints in Japan.
