"I was interested in the cultural history tied up in urban signage. Both of these old signs are in Auckland city and have survived until now. Ironically, just two weeks after doing the Bushells sign, it was painted over by an irate 'Mr Roopa'(the long-time owner of the building) who was furious that the Council would not help with the ongoing expense of preserving this bit of local history. 'Burrells Yard' still survives, lording it over a facinating demolition-cum-junk yard, which, because its in the middle of a prime development area, is also probably doomed. But I loved the total cultural incongruity of the Kiwi/sheep/demolition-man and the mosque dome in the background. These visual markers of history are so rare now; its a great pity they are not recognised by the Historic Places Trust as something worth preserving"
