COURSE STRUCTURE
Topic 1: Intro to Debate
# of Weeks: 0.5
Lessons:
-Toulmin Model of Argument
-Clash
-Refutation
Due:
Lecture Cross-ex Strategies
Be in control from the start
Begin with questions of clarification to make your opposition feel comfortable (eg. can you restate your value, please?)
Be polite, say things like "thankyou," and "I understand"
Much of the technique is tricking them into thinking you're they're friend, then exposing the weakness of their arguments to the audience (remember, the audience is your judge)
Mitigate emotional feelings towards your opponent. Smile. Be in control.
Move into questions to (1) expose fallacies and (2) inadequate evidence
Use your knowledge of Toulmin to puncture holes. Consider their claim, data, and warrant
Always begin with yes/no and close-ended questions (don't allow them the chance to ramble)
Always attempt to get to an end point that gives them an open-ended question which they have trouble answering
If they begin to give an answer that is not truthful, bring them back into the yes/no line
Painting your opposition into a corner
