by Martin Vince

1996, 278pp, ISBN: 9780888393937

This is a very important title about the birds which are generally known as Softbills in aviculture. As the author discusses in book, these birds are called Softbills not because they have soft beaks but infact it is their diet which is soft food.

Book is divided into twelve chapters covering topics from purchasing, housing, feeding and breeding to hand rearing and various diseases along with their treatments. There is also chapter on plants which lists many plants that are considered safe for softbills along with those that are toxic. Author has years of hands-on experience with many different species of softbills and his experience really speaks in this book.

Last chapter deals with species accounts with each chapter containing introduction of order and family of bird that is being discussed along with their sizes, compatibility with other species, diet, management and breeding. In the last, there is a diet index of all the species discussed in book along with an index of their common and scientific names. There is also a color section in middle of the book containing excellent colorful pictures of many softbills species, their diets, housing, incubation, hand rearing and breeding etc.

Recommendation:

A MUST HAVE title for anyone who isinterested to learn about these beautiful birds.
