Hart Award in Memory of Ken

In 2013, the organizing committee initiated The Hart Award in Memory of Ken. Ken Hart was an early participant in the Championship and soon became a member of the organizing committee. He brought new life to the Championship and secured many sponsorships such that every golfer went home with a door prize. We could now all tell our wives we won a prize!

Sadly Ken was diagnosed with cancer in the Spring of 2012 and died in August of that same year.

Many of the past winners of this Award meet each year to determine who to honor. In prior years most honorees were closely connected with volunteering for our Championship. They put in a lot of hours to make this one of the best senior men’s golf events of the year.

In 2022, the selection committee chose to honor one of the biggest supporters of Saskatchewan golf, not just this event. Doug Mader has coached, volunteered and played golf at the highest level. He has been on 9 Willingdon Cup teams, was runner-up twice in the Amateur and Mid-Amateur and won the Mid-Amateur in 1987 and Provincial Senior Amateur in 1996. Over 8 years in the 1990’s, he made 7 provincial senior teams.

But in 1997 he did something unique in all of Canada, something that had never been done before and likely will never be done again. Doug made all three provincial teams, the Willingdon Cup Team, The Mid-amateur team and the Senior team.

Doug has been inducted to the Saskatchewan Golf Hall of Fame and also the Regina Sports Hall of Fame for golf and badminton.
