The original Up Step game is about moving together and doing the same thing at the same time but elements of pretend play will bring new life to the game when this is needed. Each step or stair becomes a new pretend place and things occur at each step in an adventure that is structured by the steps. Perhaps there is a magic fish at the bottom of the steps and the fish is trying to bring your child a golden ring. The quest begins! Each step down requires a feat of courage. The first step down the mountain is Icy cold, Brrr! The next step has a Sleeping rattlesnake, Shhh! Don't wake him up! The next step is too steep and so you need to Sit and scoot down. And so on. Finally, you get to the magic fish and claim your prize!

A game like Up Step can be recreated each time you go with your child up or down the steps. Perhaps the next time you are moving up the steps, your quest is to put out a fire on the top floor of the building. Perhaps at every step, you and your child rescue a Beany Baby animal. Some of the Beanie Baby animals will need oxygen because there was so much smoke, Cough! Cough! The game of Up Step is still the framework but now each step is a part of a grand adventure for two firefighters trying to save everyone in a skyscraper.
