Rabbit Proof Fence

Sometimes, it is difficult to understand how much suffering a person can go through unless we try to put ourselves in his/her shoes.

"Rabbit Proof Fence" is a 2002 Australian drama film starring Kenneth Branagh.

The film is set in 1931 and it tells the story of three young mixed-race Aboriginal girls, who ran away from the Moore River Native Settlement in order to return to their Aboriginal families. It follows the girls as they walk for 9 weeks along 1,500 miles of the Australian rabbit proof fence to return to their community while being tracked by a white authority figure and a black tracker.

Despite dealing with the Stolen Generation of Aboriginal children, the topic which lies beneath is racism. Sadly, racism is still very much present in our society today.

SPEAKING TASK. Get into groups of 4/5 and discuss the following:

  • In which ways can you connect the film to what happened in nazi German during WW2?

  • Try to think of examples of racism nowadays:

          • Mexican Wall to stop immigration

          • Refugees crisis

          • Brexit

          • ...

  • Choose a spokesperson who shares your group's ideas with the rest of the class.
