Fair Phyllis

Fair Phyllis I saw sitting all alone

Feeding her flock near to the mountain side.

The shepherds knew not,

they knew not whither she was gone,

But after her lover Amyntas hied,

Up and down he wandered

whilst she was missing;

When he found her,

O then they fell a-kissing.

Fair Phyllis est un madrigal anglais de John Farmer, où l'auteur joue avec les mots. Par exemple, à la première ligne "La belle Phyllis j'ai vu assise toute seule", seule la soprano chante pour représenter Phyllis toute seule. A la ligne suivante "Nourrissant son troupeau à flanc de montagne", toutes les voix chantent puisqu'il sagit de son troupeau. La deuxième phrase, qui commence par "de haut en bas" et se termine par "ils s’embrassèrent" se répète, ce qui provoque la liaison "ils s’embrassèrent de haut en bas."
