A memorable visit to The Deep South

The Colonels’ Itinerary Suggestions

1. From Atlanta, drive 90 minutes and stay at The Colonels B&B in Athens1.

2. Visit the great southern university town of Athens with many references to the American Civil War:

- Athens preserves the magnificent restored Antebellum mansion of C.S.A. Brigadier General T. R. R. Cobb, the primary author of the Confederate Constitution and killed in action at the Battle of Fredericksburg. T. R. R. Cobb is buried on Oconee Hill, Athens’ old Cemetery in the shadow of beautiful magnolias and water oaks.

-Many Antebellum and Victorian mansions adorn South Milledge Avenue and Prince Avenue , i.a. the house of C.S.A. Brigadier General Howell Cobb, once governor of the State of Georgia.

-The Double-Barreled Cannon at City Hall is an unusual Civil War relic and a local landmark.

-You will discover in Athens nearly half of the points of interest of the Civil War Heartland Leaders Trail - a regional self-guided heritage trail.

If you happen to stay at The Colonels the first weekend of November, make a 30 minutes drive through the cotton fields and participate at the annual Bostwick cotton gin festival and the old timer tractor parade.

OR

Asheville, NC - Charleston, SC - Savannah, GA

4. On the road between the Atlanta airport and The Colonels in Athens, visit the Stone Mountain Rock Carvings of the Leaders of the Confederacy (Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis), initiated by the American artist and sculptor Gutzon de la Mothe Borglum, also famous for creating the monumental presidents' heads at Mount Rushmore, South Dakota.

1 Tour can be reversed, as you can leave the Old and Deep South out of Atlanta via The Colonels B&B.
