COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course introduces the students to principles and concepts of education curriculum, development and methods and media of teaching. It also describes the steps in curriculum development and implementation of educational programmes in nursing
COURSE CONTENTS

• Factors influencing development of philosophy of nursing education.
Meaning
The word education is derived is derived from the Latin word ‘educare’ which means ‘lead out’, which means ‘growth from the within’. Or in other word ‘educare’ means ‘bring up’, ‘to train, or ‘to mould’. According to this derivation, education is the bringing up of the child in a deirable manner.
Some educationist believe that the word education has been derived from the two word 'e' means 'out off' and 'duco' means 'to lead'.
'Pedagogy' is the another term which is commonly used for mentioning education. This term is derived from the two Greek word namely 'pedo' means child and 'logos' means discussion, which means "science of instruction for the purpose of leading the pupils.
Definition
1. According to Pestalozzi, " Education is the natural, harmonious and progressive development of man's innate powers". By the virtue of birth itself man is endowed with hidden potentials or powers such as physical, intellectual, aesthetic, social and spiritual powers. Education has to serve as a means for developing these powers in a harmonious manner.
2. According to John Dewey, " Education is the development of all those capacities in the individual which will enable him to control his environment and fulfill his potentialities". This definition emphasize the need for providing rich and varied educational programmes in order to develop different capacities of the student population.
3. According to Mahatma Gandhi, " Education is the all - round drawing out the best in child and man - body, mind and spirit". He believes that children are bestowed with tremendous vitality and curiosity to learn.
Education as a process
Education process mainly depends on the inherent potentials of the child. Through education process teacher can bring out the hidden talents in the child by way of conducting a conducive environment. So, education process can be viewed as a bi-polar process, tri-polar process or a multi-polar process.
Education as a bi-polar process.
Some educationist view education as a bi-polar process in which education is the end results of the interaction between educator/teacher and the educant/students. Teacher impart knowledge to the students with an intention to change the behavior of students. Educationist like Adams and Ross believe that education is essentially a bi-polar process and recommends close co-operation and understanding between teacher and students for achieving the aims of education.
