Named buildings and other structures present a challenge for art catalogers. A building may share its name as well as physical structure(s) with a corporate body. In this case, the same heading usually stands for both the corporate body and the building. Such a heading is generally established in the Name Authority File (LC/NAF) according to RDA and the LC/PCC Policy Statements. When a building is just a building, the heading is normally a candidate for establishment as a subject heading in LCSH and is not eligible for use as a main or added entry. Hence, the need for Art SACO. The challenge comes in the desire for using a building heading as an added entry, e.g., as a venue for an exhibition or holder of a collection. For a fuller discussion of the issues, see the final report of the Task Force on Named Buildings and Other Structures of the Subject Analysis Committee, attached below (TF-FinalReport_4-13-05appvd.doc).
Examples:
* Holkham Hall in East Anglia is the seat of the Earl of Leicester and there is a collection of art and manuscripts.
* Italian palazzi that serve as the venue for exhibitions, perhaps organized by the municipal museum
* LC database has heading: Wilton House (England)--Art collections--Catalogs [the authority record for the Wilton House is in LCSH: sh85146837]
Current practice allows for an entity established in LC/SAF (LCSH) to be recreated in LC/NAF if it is needed as a main or added entry. Here is the relevant instruction for moving a heading from SAF to NAF from the LC Descriptive cataloging manual, section Z1 on name and series authorities, appendix 1 on headings for ambiguous entities:
PCC Catalogers: If a Group 2—Subject Authority Group heading is being used as a main or added entry, create a name authority record according to subject cataloging rules. Add a 667 note to the NAR with the statement “Subj. Headings Manual/RDA” If a Group 2 Heading for the same entity exists in the LCSH Authority File create an NAR (cf. DCM Z1 Appendix 1: Ambiguous Entities, Section, 3.1) and send a notification to your PCC liaison to delete the existing subject authority record.
Examples of buildings established in NAF:
Palatul Cotroceni (Bucharest, Romania) - no2010116735
Palazzo della Gran Guardia (Verona, Italy) - nb2012004139
Palazzo dei diamanti (Ferrara, Italy) - no2011087548
Palazzo del Banco di Napoli (Genoa, Italy) - nr98032202
