The S.P.G. Mission School was built by King Mindon in 1869, under the superintendence of the Referend John Ebenezer Marks. 

Marks had been the headmaster of the St. John's School in Rangoon and was invited by King Mindon to built a school at Mandalay.

The school was attended by four young princes. One of them was prince Thibaw at the time he was 10 years old. In forground of the photo one can see the four Princes (Shwe Koo, Mine Done, Thibaw & Thagara) under a canopy of golden umbrellas which are royal insignia.
