Male elephants are usually enticed by the blandishments of females, trained for the purpose, into an inclosure or Keddah, from whence they cannot extricate themselves, and are easily secured.

Buffaloes were used for transport, in agriculture, and in the timber industry. The cart has characteristic upswept, curved sides, a prow-like wooden section on which the yoke is supported, and solid wooden disc wheels, used because they performed well on muddy ground during the wet season. Wooden carts are still a common sight and are widely used by farmers in Myanmar today albeit it is rare that they are pulled by buffalos they are mostly pulled by oxen. The solid wheels have been superseded by wooden spoke wheels.

These conveyances are on springs but have no seats, the occupant having to assume the most comfortable position he can on a level cushioned surface. There are doors on all four sides, but the exit is usually at the back.
The pace is from 2 to 4 miles per hour, according to the state of the road. The woodwork is often elaborately decorated with carving.
During the Burmese reign no one but royalty or those in high office were permitted to have spokes to their wheels, commoners had to, use solid blocks as wheels.
Most of these vehicles are now numbered and registered at a fixed fair.

The caption is by Hooper himself: “This picture must be left to describe itself. Like our hansoms it is not built to accommodate more than two; it differs slightly in other respects as may be seen from the photograph. I may perhaps remark that getting in and out of it is a difficult acrobatic performance, and that when you are inside it depends very much on who No.2 is whether you enjoy your ride or not.”

A caption by Hooper accompanying the photograph describes the image: “The carts themselves consist of little more than a pair of wheels on an axle connected by a pole with the yoke. The fodder, which forms the load, on the top of which the cart-man is perched, consists of the Jowarree or Millet described in No.42 [photo no.312/(46)]. This picture was taken on the road passing along the south face of the city. Being beyond the South Gate it has not, as yet, been found necessary to expend labour or capital on the road, and it therefore remains for the present in the condition in which we found all the roads; some idea may therefore be formed from this photograph of what that condition was.”

In an accompanying caption, Hooper describes the type of cart shown in the photograph: “The carts used for that purpose are of the most primitive description, the wheels being sometimes made from one solid piece of wood; at other times, as in this case, of three pieces joined together. They are drawn by buffaloes, which are very powerful beasts, the load being so arranged that the greater part of the weight rests on the necks of the animals. The ‘solid wheeled’ carts which are often met with in the Ceded Districts and the Mysore country in India are of exactly the same pattern as these Burmese carts.”
