Aegean Art :

The first civilizations in Europe emerged around the Aegean Sea, across the Mediterranean from Egypt. These cultures were seafaring and are divided into three people groups, who spoke different languages and produced different kinds of art. We'll study Cycladic, Minoan, and Mycenaean art.

1. Cycladic

Cycladic people lived on the Greek islands, the Cyclades, produced portable sculptures of stylized standing women and seated men playing musical instruments like the harp. These statuettes are abstract, with triangular forms and some may have had more details painted on.

The Minoans, who lived on the island of Crete, built sprawling palaces, like the Palace at Knossos, characterized by columns with bulbous capitals that taper down to the floor. Minoan frescos feature figures with long, sinuous curves and narrow waists.
