Here at Arshavsky Music School, our mission is to bring the finest training of the 19th and 20th Centuries of the Russian Music Conservatory to the modern America of the 21st Century through Piano, Violin, Viola, and Voice lessons.
We proudly carry the legacy of highly respected European traditions of musical performance and pedagogy. The entire faculty of the Arshavsky Music School is Russian-conservatory trained and specializes in Piano, Violin, Voice, Viola and Music Theory.
Our professors have passed the unique traditions of their legendary predecessors – Busoni, Liszt, Czerny and... yes, even Beethoven. Our intention is to continue to develop great traditions of Russian and European music education and (at the same time) to accumulate the most productive ideas and experiences of the contemporary world of musical pedagogy. We never stop learning....
Arshavsky Music School is one of very few family music schools in the United States, where teaching is a family tradition. The Arshavsky Family faculty are each parents and we teach the way we want our own children to be taught.
For the last 20 years we have prepared many students for successful conservatory and college auditions and they have gone on to study at such world-renowned institutions as Eastman, Juilliard, Manhattan School of Music, Peabody Conservatory, New England Conservatory and to the finest Universities such as Boston University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northwestern University, Texas Christian University, Emory University, Duke University, Rice University and other colleges where many of them became soloists and teachers. Most of our pre-college students have since completed their graduate studies and are now teaching at various colleges and universities across the world.
As part of our (never ending) learning we have attended dozens of Music Teachers National Association's Conferences, World Piano Pedagogy Conferences, Dorothy Delay Violin Institute of the Julliard School, Van Cliburn's Piano Institute and many other teaching events. For thirteen consecutive Summers the faculty members of our school traveled to the Verbier Music Academy (Switzerland) to observe and take part of the Master Classes presented by the best teachers and musicians from all over the world. We have collaborated with such pedagogues as Claude Frank, Dmitry Bashkirov, Boris Kuschnir, Gary Graffman, Menahem Pressler, Zachar Bron, Thomas Quasthoff, Kiri Te Kanawa and many others.
We teach our students to make music speaking from their hearts-emotionally, expressively, convincingly.
First of all-sincere love for music and deep understanding that "it is music's lofty mission to shed the light on the depth of the human's heart" (-Robert Schumann).
We do our best teaching proper technical skills which allow students to perform successfully the repertoire of different styles and ages, to produce beautiful, rich, real musical sound, and to play "difficult" pieces of virtuosity easily and effortlessly.
We take serious care of the physical wellness of our student's hands in order to prevent all kinds of professional injuries (unfortunately we know that many musicians suffer from all kinds of "music-related injuries" that could be (and had to be!) prevented by the correct training and by teaching the healthy instrumental techniques).
We consider ourselves being not just music instructors but mentors and close long-term friends of our students (and we are lucky: after leaving for colleges and universities our students keep in touch and visit us often)
"In music-loves comes first and the understanding comes later. We only find later why we love it" (Menahem Pressler)
To find out why we love it,and how to translate our love to other people-we feel it is necessary to teach our students to understand the language of the music, the logical structures of this language and the way how such complex structures are functioning.
That is why we help our students to understand music theory and the history of music.
We keep our students informed of the most interesting musical events (concerts and recitals) and encourage them to attend, to listen and to be involved in the process of music making from both sides- the performers and the listeners.
We try not only to educate our students but to wake up their imagination, intuition, emotionality. We are sure that only the combination of analytic and intuitive approaches make this wonderful "chemistry" of artistic performance and give the real joy of making music. We believe that teaching music is art and the art of teaching can bring students to (and even beyond) the highest level of their natural ability.
Because we know that "music is a universal language of mankind"(Longfellow),which can "name the unnameable and communicate the unknowable"(Leonard Bernstein).
Because we would be happy to sign our names under Dr.Paulnack's words:"Music is a basic need for human survival, one of the ways we make sense of our lives, one of the ways to express feelings when there are no words".
Because the study of music improves the intellectual abilities,creativity,imagination,concentration,self-control and helps us to do other things better.
Because we are sure that the love for music is contagious and we want to spread around the unique energy and the magic power of music.
Because we believe that "no man is complete without a feeling for music and understanding of what music can do for him"(Zoltan Kodali)
Just because we are musicians and we love what we do.
Greatest Russian pianist and teacher Heinrich Neuhaus wrote: "It is impossible to create talents, but it is possible to create the soil from which talents are growing and flourishing."
