Sarah has studied music with Mr. Daniel Arshavsky (violin) and Mrs. Anna Arshavskaya (piano) since she was six years old. Shortly after she began her studies with them, the music director of a local Japanese church began inviting her every year to perform both violin and piano at his church. When she was nine years old the music director at Sarah’s church asked for volunteers to help with the music program. He was quite skeptical about accepting Sarah’s offer to help until after he heard her audition. Since then she has had many requests for voluntary performance on special occasions at several area churches and other community venues such as nursing homes and hospices. These requests are usually for violin but frequently include piano. She has performed on numerous occasions in weddings, receptions, and similar events with both piano and violin. Often she performed on both instruments in the same event.
For eight consecutive years (2002-2009), beginning in the fifth grade, Sarah has been chosen as Conference Recitalist (first place) by the Georgia Music Teachers Association (GMTA) in String or Concerto competitions. The most recent award was in April 2009. The GMTA has also presented her with a number of Outstanding Performer awards in piano competition and in 2006 she was chosen as Conference Recitalist for both piano and strings. This was the first time in the history of the GMTA that a competitor received this honor in more than one category in the same competition. The Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) has also recognized Sarah in state level string competitions in Georgia. She was named winner (2005) and alternate in other competitions.
Sarah has also received several local awards and contributed to national recognition of the Lassiter High School Orchestra. For three consecutive years (2006-2008) the Lassiter Orchestra was awarded first place in national competitions in Washington, D.C., New York City, and Tampa, Florida respectively. Sarah also won individual awards in these events. In New York she received the 2007 National Orchestra Competition Best High String Soloist award and, in 2008, the Tampa Heritage Festival Maestro award. In the 2008-2009 school year Lassiter was invited to perform at the prestigious Midwest Music Clinic in Chicago. Sarah was concert master of the Lassiter Orchestra in the 10th through the 12th grades. In March 2008 Sarah also served as concert master for the Georgia All State 11th and 12th Grade Orchestra. In April 2008 Sarah received the Don Boles Violin Scholarship from The Atlanta Music Club and that summer was accepted to participate in the Summit Music Festival at Manhattanville College in Purchase, New York.
Personal interests and academic excellence were not sacrificed for this. In what little spare time she has, Sarah enjoys hanging out with friends. She has become a formidable challenger in many video games and has demonstrated exceptional culinary expertise in preparing new and unusual dishes for friends and family. She studied French in high school and has pursued Spanish and Japanese on her own. Sarah was an honor student in Lassiter High School’s gifted program and on May 23, 2009 graduated Magna Cum Laude. She has been accepted at the Eastman School of Music as a violin performance major where she will be studying under the tutelage of Professor Mikhail Kopelman beginning in the 2009-2010 school year. Sarah intends to continue studying foreign languages at Eastman in preparation for being a positive representative of the United States, hopefully as a world class musician.
