The story of Hammy
The idea to use a hammer as our AMS Cross Country mascot came from Jenna Stigge during the '07 season.
One of our main team goals is to pound the hills & the course that we are running upon, so it is natural that we would use a hammer for the mascot.
Hammy travels with the AMS Cross Country team to all meets. Before our first race of the meet, the entire team gathers around and puts a hand on Hammy and breaks with "Pound it!"
After this, Hammy watches the races from the sidelines in the care of an AMS team member.
Last season, we added Sharknadoes as our mascot. This goes well with our first mascot Hammy as we feature Hammerhead sharks (and other sharks as well). The idea is for AMS XC runners to attack the courses that we run on and "pick off" other runners, especially at the end of the race, when things are the toughest.
