Dr. Umit Demirbas, Principal Investigator (www, e-mail)
Biography: Umit Demirbas received his BS degrees in physics & electrical engineering (2004, Koc University), his MS degree in materials science (2006, Koc University), and his PhD degree in electrical engineering (2010, MIT). He is currently an associate professor in the Department of Electrical-Electronics Engineering at Antalya Bilim University and a visiting scientist at DESY.
During his undergraduate and MS years (2000-2006), Dr. Demirbas was with the Koc University Laser Research Laboratory, where he mainly worked on the development of broadly-tunable Cr:ZnSe lasers under the supervision of Prof. Alphan Sennaroglu. During his PhD years (2006-2010), he was a member of the Optics and Quantum Electronics Group at the Research Laboratory of Electronics of MIT, where he performed studies on the development of low-cost femtosecond Cr:Colquiriite lasers under the supervision of Prof. Franz Kärtner and Prof. James Fujimoto. He has been with the Modern Optics and Quantum Electronics Group of Konstanz University since September 2010, where he mainly works on development of ultra-short pulse fiber lasers and amplifiers under the supervision of Prof. Alfred Leitenstorfer. He is currently also leading the Laser Technology Laboratory at International Antalya University. His group's research interests include solid-state and fiber laser development and their technological applications in multiphoton microscopy and laser frequency metrology.
Dr. Demirbas is an author and coauthor of more than 40 journal papers. He serves as reviewer for Optics Letters, Optics Express, Applied Optics, JOSA-B, Optics Communications, Optical & Quantum Electronics and Materials Characterization journals. He is a member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Photonics Society, Optical Society of America (OSA), The International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE), and Optical Committee of Turkey (OCT). He is a EU Marie Curie CIG Fellow (2012), a Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow (2010), a IEEE Photonics Society Graduate Student Fellow (2009), and one of the finalists of OSA New Focus/Bookham Student Award (2008).
