"STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) has been a driving force for advancing technology and socio-economic development. Governments around the world have spared no effort to promote STEM education and STEM-related industries to enhance their global competitiveness. There is also a growing demand for talent with knowledge and competency associated with these subjects, such as problem solving, innovation, logical thinking and technology literacy.
With its core mission of leading the strategic development of teacher education, the Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) is committed to preparing students for future opportunities and challenges. The University has been driving educational innovations and advancing pedagogies through a cross-disciplinary approach to stimulate children's interest in STEM and cultivate their computational and innovative thinking.
Cross-sectoral collaboration is key. To this end, EdUHK has been working with in-service teachers, schools and non-governmental organisations to advance learning and teaching in this area. EdUHK is delighted to support the Liberal Studies Cup on STEM Education.
"There are few things in life more exciting than making your own discovery or contributing new knowledge.
Whatever your passion, and wherever your interests lie, everyone has the potential to research new ideas and produce something unique.
The Annual Quiz is an excellent platform for reaching out to young people and revealing to them the range of possibilities that such research techniques and skills offer.
Research is fundamental to learning, and teaching and learning should be integrated in the classroom to generate new knowledge.
Whether you aim to be a scientist, a historian, a business consultant or lawyer, research is a basic requirement.
I am delighted to have this opportunity to serve as an advisor on this excellent initiative."
Over the past decade, the Annual Quiz has provided students with a rich, interactive and inquiry-based learning experience. I wish the Liberal Studies Cup on STEM Education a great success!"
"I am very happy to accept the invitation and be involved in this important and meaningful event.
My advice for participants to conduct research on better implementation of STEM education in Hong Kong is (a) application of science and technology to solve significant health problems in Hong Kong; and (b) to understand the human brain."
"Being a global metropolis, Hong Kong has increasingly placed more emphasis on innovation and technological advancement, and with it, a much heavier accent on STEM education. Since there is no ceiling to technology, the more important issue for educators to consider is how technology may be utilized for the betterment and not the destruction of mankind.
The Annual Quiz has selected a timely topic for research this year. Hopefully, the findings by teenage students will not only provide us with innovative and inspiring approaches to conducting STEM education, but they will also guide us to think about how STEM education can best be couched in a humanities context.
My advice for participants is that the implementation of STEM education should not be at the sacrifice of humanities education. Without the humanities context, we will be in danger of creating a more robotized and less humanized society."
Messages for the Annual Quiz
In alphabetical order of surname)
"First of all, I want to congratulate the Annual Quiz. This year is their 10th year anniversary, and our AIDS Institute was also established in 2007. We share the same 10th year anniversary celebration this year.
After I received the invitation, I am very pleased to learn that this annual event will put HIV/AIDS as an emphasized topic for this year. During the past 10 years, this is actually the first major event among the high schools putting HIV prevention as a major topic. Therefore I want to thank the President, Mr Leung, for inviting me. Also I am very pleased to have such an opportunity to share my personal experience with you. In future, if you have any HIV-related questions, you are invited to stop by our AIDS Institute based at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong.
"It is my sincere hope that this most meaningful event will go from strength to strength in educating our younger generations.
Besides sex education especially on sex behaviour and practice, it will be good if students can also discuss the measures taken in Hong Kong for the prevention of HIV transmission from infected pregnant women to their babies."
The second thing - I want to congratulate each of you because personally I read through all your proposals and essays. After reading, I was very touched indeed, feeling each of you actually put a huge amount of efforts into such kind of research. Many suggestions made by you are highly relevant. I really want to congratulate you for your efforts. The most important thing is not about the end results of the competition, who won the first prize or the second prize. The most important thing to me, I hope also to you, is your participation and putting your efforts on such a very important human health issue. This is very important, more than the prize itself. Therefore, I am pleased to see you attending this event, and most importantly, I hope each of you will put continued efforts in the fight against HIV/AIDS in future."
"I would be pleased to serve as an Advisor for this worthwhile project for the youngsters in Hong Kong."
"Every year, the World AIDS Day (WAD) on 1 December draws people together from around the world to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS and demonstrate international solidarity in tackling the pandemic. The Hong Kong Government has all along been very supportive for various organizations to raise the people's awareness of HIV prevention through different activities around this WAD.
In Hong Kong, there has been an increasing trend of new HIV infection in the past three decades. Men who have sex with men, particularly those young populations of early 20s are especially affected. The situation gives us a strong signal that AIDS prevention should start with the young.
The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has set the theme 'On the Fast-track to End AIDS' for the coming five years. We have now come to a time when all of us should take a fast-track to educate our young people the importance of HIV prevention and self-protection. While the traditional school setting, including secondary schools and tertiary education institutions, will continue be an important platform for sex education, the advancement of teaching format and information technology would bring about more creative measures in the promotion of HIV prevention amongst young people.
It is a great pleasure for me to be an advisor of the Annual Quiz and for the Food and Health Bureau to be a supporting institution of the event. Through conducting research, consulting advisors, writing reports, as well as making presentations at school seminars, university symposiums and conferences, the Annual Quiz provides precious opportunities for participating students to research on AIDS prevention and share their findings with other students.
I am particularly impressed by the foresight of the Annual Quiz in promoting research-based general education in Hong Kong, which is essential for improving the quality of our population and facilitating Hong Kong's development into a knowledge-based society. As the year 2017 marks the 10th anniversary of the Annual Quiz, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Annual Quiz on its great achievements over the past ten years. I wish this meaningful project every success in future years."
"AIDS is a social issue as well as a medical one. Since the first cases of HIV were reported in the 1980s, millions have died from AIDS-related illnesses and millions more continue to live with HIV around the world today. Universities play an important role in fighting this global epidemic through education and research: combating the social stigma and prejudices associated with HIV/AIDS and driving medical research to help end AIDS.
The University of Hong Kong is committed to fighting discrimination through our official policies supporting diversity and by teaching our students about the importance of building a just and inclusive society. The AIDS Institute of the University of Hong Kong is dedicated to research on the virological and immunological mechanisms underlying HIV pathogenesis and the development of effective AIDS vaccines.
The University of Hong Kong is proud to support the Medicine Annual Quiz 2017 - Liberal Studies Cup on AIDS. We are confident the knowledge the students gain and the skills they develop while preparing for this event will serve them well in the future."
"Almost 40 million people are living with HIV in the world, and millions have died from the disease. At the beginning of the new millennium HIV/AIDS was responsible for so many deaths that the United Nations perceived the disease as a major threat to human security. As part of the millennium development agenda, HIV/AIDS was included in the fourth Millennium Development Goal (MDG4), which aimed to reverse the trajectory of the disease. With countries and donors supporting this goal, many millions of people began to receive antiretroviral treatment.
Despite dramatic improvements in reducing new infections and deaths, HIV infected 2.1 million and 1.1 million died during 2015 alone, according to UNAIDS. In Hong Kong, although the numbers of people infected are relatively small (8 410 between 1984-2016), the numbers of newly HIV-infected people have continued to rise over the past few years, driven mainly by transmissions in young people especially in men who have sex with men (MSM). New targets have now been set, as part of the sustainable development agenda, to eliminate HIV as a public threat by 2030. International organizations, countries, communities and individuals need to contemplate how the epidemic continues to be a threat and what are the steps to achieving elimination.
The HIV epidemic has affected regions of the world differently, with Africa having a predominantly heterosexual route in the general population, while in Asia and other parts the spread is concentrated among high risk populations, such as MSM, sex workers, intravenous drug abusers and unwitting partners of all these key populations. What is most alarming now, is that young people aged 13-24 accounted for more than 1 in 5 new HIV diagnoses in 2014 across the world.
Students participating in this project should demonstrate a thorough understanding of how HIV is transmitted, which populations are considered to be most at risk in Hong Kong and try to understand the reasons behind this. The World Health Organization (WHO) provides a lot of recommendations for countries on the identification, prevention and management of HIV; students are advised to critically review some of the latest guidance from the United Nations, including WHO, to determine how these may be adopted in Hong Kong. They should endeavor to identify some successful programmes in other countries in the Asia Pacific region such as Thailand, and also in other parts of the world where HIV is a more generalized epidemic such as Brazil and South Africa. Lessons learnt from prevention programmes in other countries may be informative for the local situation.
I look forward to reviewing research into how young people view what is needed to improve HIV prevention in Hong Kong and how lessons learnt elsewhere may be applied to the local situation. I wish you well in this important endeavor."

"Our environment is changing. In 2016, we have the highest global March surface temperature average of the historical records between 1880 and 2016. Understanding our energy, water and food flows can let us to quantify our impacts and identify possible solutions. As gathering points of our creative minds, schools are good place for us to explore our energy and material systems innovatively. Investigating green practices of other schools in the world, we can generate novel environmental protection measures for our schools.
For the perceived impeding environmental challenges, knowledge and solutions are urgently needed. The 2016 Liberal Studies Cup on Environmental Protection provides excellent opportunities for our secondary students to understand and propose solutions for our environmental protection. I deeply appreciate the diligent efforts of the organizing committee for this meaningful event which can lead us to a better world."
"There has never been a more critical time in the history of the world to consider environmental governance. Most of the world's population understands at least some of the urgency of a focus on a sustainable environment for the sake of the human race long-term. Environmental changes in our current world are associated with new threats to our health, happiness, and survival. Pollution-related diseases, the Zika virus, El Nino effects on crops - all of these are salient current reminders of the urgency of our consideration of environmental governance, across all disciplines, including the sciences, social sciences, law, business, and the arts. How can schools and communities promote maximum environmental sustainability, both in Hong Kong and abroad?
The Faculty of Social Science of the Chinese University of Hong Kong is very proud to support this initiative. The Liberal Studies Cup on Environmental Protection, specifically on the topic of environmental governance in 2016, offers an excellent chance for students, and indeed all of Hong Kong, to reflect on the importance of environmental governance for a sustainable planet. We are very grateful to the organizers of this very important event and particularly to all students comprising the teams taking place in this event across the region. Congratulations on participating in such important work!"
"We spend one-third of a day in schools. Schools are where we develop our attitudes and behaviour. A green campus is a great venue for nurturing friendliness with our environment. A green school is more than just architecture. It emerges from the hands and hearts of every school member. It requires our willingness and ability to practise environmentally friendly lifestyles. Green lifestyles need not cost the Earth. Turn off lights. Use less paper. Take stairs. Order less rice. Reuse and recycle as much as you can… Ideas are there. But how should we motivate school members to realise them? That is the question.
It gives me great pleasure to support the Liberal Studies Cup on Environmental Protection. I trust that all participating teams will benefit tremendously from the contest. We look forward to your fantastic proposals."

In alphabetical order of surname)
"Food is a basic need. Hunger and malnutrition reduce productivity, stifle creativity, and erode human dignity. Some types of food production damage the environment, while food waste accounts for a large share of what enters landfills. The food business is a global industry employing millions. Many places are defined by their cuisine, and tourists travel the world to enjoy good, fresh food! What all this means is that food is an urgent social, economic, environmental, and political issue. It means that all of us need to better understand the complexities and trade‐offs needed to be truly 'Food Wise'. This is a really important moment to discuss and debate food and Hong Kong society.
"Waste problem in Hong Kong is worrying. Food waste is the largest source of Hong waste problem. Food waste is not only a waste of cost, the process of food delivery and food decomposition in landfills also generates and upsurges greenhouse gas emissions.
Therefore, for the benefit of the community, we encourage students, by using a creative way, to encourage people to change their lifestyles, and to promote business and industry to actively reduce food waste."
The Faculty of Social Sciences at Hong Kong Baptist University is immensely proud to support the Food Wise Liberal Studies Cup. We salute the Organizing Committee for selecting this topic, and are sure that the preparations all the teams make will increase their understanding - and appreciation - of the tremendous importance of food."
"By participating in the Annual Quiz, you will gain a wonderful opportunity to learn and to contribute to the local community."
"Nowadays, food supply chain waste (FSCW) is widely recognized as an immense environmental, economic and societal burden that should be addressed through both prevention and valorization policies. The huge quantities of FSCW generated annually (1.3 billion tonnes of edible food) is more than 20% of total agricultural production for food and non-food uses that requires around 30% of total agricultural land area (FAO, 2013). In Hong Kong, about 3 600 tonnes of food waste is generated every day, accounting for almost 40% of municipal solid waste. For these reasons, the Food Wise Liberal Studies Cup provides an excellent opportunity to promote food waste prevention, expand the issue of the three 'Rs' (reduce, reuse and recycle), and co-utilisation of food wastages.
I would like to congratulate the Organizing Committee and every success of the Annual Quiz. My best wishes that such activity and spirit would be continued to promote Food Wise general education to the public."
"The concept of Food Wise is building up in Hong Kong in recent years, in which 'food education' should start from an early age. We shall promote recycling, prevention and reduction of food waste at source as well as surplus food donation in the community to the younger generation. Students need to understand what a balanced diet is. This is the knowledge for them to make better food choices.
To encourage children to share Food Wise general education with their family and friends by making use of knowledge learnt in classes in a creative, precise and concise manner, will not only become more healthy, but will also save our planet. With cultivating healthy life style for community, I would like to congratulate the Organizing Committee and every success of the Annual Quiz."
"According to the report from the Global Harvest Initiative released in April 2014, when the world's population rises to 9 billion by 2050 we may not be able to feed all people on the Earth if food productivity does not increase substantially. By then, food issues could become as politically destabilizing as energy issues are in some regions today. It should also be noted that one in eight people in the world are now suffering from malnourishment. To tackle such pressing issue, we need visionary strategies which should include innovative technologies to increase food sources and production. Equally important, the public must have full knowledge and commitment to practice Food Wise, i.e. actively reduce food consumption and minimize food waste. The Annual Quiz offers an effective platform for participating students to interact and lay out creative ideas to instill Food Wise culture into Hong Kong community.
I would like to pay tribute to the Organizing Committee for staging the Social Science Annual Quiz - Food Wise Liberal Studies Cup, and wish such meaningful activity every success in support of the Government's Food Wise Hong Kong Campaign for sustainable development."
"Hong Kong is densely populated, and our daily per capita municipal solid waste production also surpasses that of neighboring metropolitan cities. Our waste problem is serious and imminent. Food waste accounts for about forty per cent of municipal solid waste currently being disposed of at landfills every day. While the Government has been adopting a multi-pronged approach to tackle our waste problem, active participation from the community is essential. Reduction at source is the first step to move on.
The Annual Quiz - Food Wise Liberal Studies Cup is a great way to promote food wise message by inducing students to learn actively, applying their knowledge from classrooms to solve our real life food waste problem, and to instill behavior change in achieving food waste reduction by 10%. We wish the Annual Quiz every success in promoting general education and improving the quality of our living. You and I can live up to food wise lifestyle together."

"The importance of regular exercise in maintaining health and preventing disease has been well publicized. Given the increasing trend of developing chronic illnesses after middle age, regular exercise certainly helps to prevent illnesses or postpone disease development. However, most people are reluctant to do regular exercise. Although they are advised to exercise, they are seldom able to sustain regular exercise.
Tai chi is an ancient Chinese martial art. It is a relatively more sustainable exercise for individuals. People who practice tai chi usually continue for a long period of time and integrate tai chi exercise into their daily routine. By understanding the contributing factors to the long-term adherence in regular tai chi exercise, strategies can be developed to promote regular exercise for health promotion and disease prevention in the general public."
"Continued advancement of medical knowledge and technology is essential to mankind - it helps unlock the unexplored facets of many deadly and emerging diseases and alleviate in turn human suffering. The more the society grasps them, the more the community becomes knowledgeable about issues on health and illness, birth and death, youth and aging. The Medicine Annual Quiz - Liberal Studies Cup on Medicine offers an ideal platform that draws together teenagers with similar interests and aspiration. It allows them to work out proposals for promoting in everyday life medical knowledge on various topics related to personal health, prevention of diseases, treatment and healthcare as well as research and development in biomedicine.
It is my honor to serve as one of the Advisors of the Medicine Annual Quiz this year. I believe the event will help Hong Kong identify and nurture groups of young talents with great potentials for the fields of medical sciences and healthcare. I sincerely wish the event a great success."
"Medical and hygienic knowledge is the most important part of general education. The promotion of knowledge in this aspect will help raise the public's personal health and overall hygienic quality of the society.
I am therefore grateful that the Annual Quiz has chosen general education on medicine as the theme of this year. I sincerely hope that through preparing for the competition, students can enhance their understanding of leading a healthy lifestyle."
"Prevention is better than cure. To promote general education on medicine, with a view to raising people's health awareness and living standard is a very important and meaningful project. It not only saves community resources on health expenditure, but makes people healthier and happier. To encourage students to make use of their knowledge learnt in classes to introduce medical knowledge which can be used in everyday life to the general public in an interesting and creative manner is indeed a great idea. Through personal involvement, students not only make contribution to the society, they also help cultivating healthy life style for themselves and their families, hopefully achieving good health in every senses including physical, psychological and spiritual well-being.
I would like to congratulate the organizing committee and every success of the Medicine Annual Quiz, with my best wishes that such activity and spirit would be continued uninterrupted to help people stay healthy and happy!"
"Glaucoma is a blinding eye disease and is the world leading cause of blindness. It damages the optic nerve irreversibly and silently. Vision can be saved if the disease is treated early. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment are the keys to the prevention of blindness in glaucoma. Public awareness of glaucoma through education is important for people to seek medical consultation at an early stage of the disease.
The Medicine Annual Quiz provides a platform for students to acquire knowledge on glaucoma and provides a channel for promoting public awareness of the disease."
"Universal immunization has changed the pattern of diseases in children. Many common disease conditions in the past have virtually disappeared and some have become extinct. Unfortunately, because of this and other reasons, non-compliance to immunization in some developed countries has led to the resurgence of some infectious diseases and required modification of the immunization programmes. The emergence of new diseases also calls for introduction of new vaccines.
"The Liberal Studies Cup on Medicine of the Medicine Annual Quiz is one of the most meaningful and successful events organized by a passionate team of youngsters. It is a renowned and territory-wide annual function, receiving tremendous support from famous scholars and reputable professionals in various disciplines.
I wish to encourage your participation in this important event to promote general education on medical knowledge - and I am certain you will find this experience fruitful and inspiring!"
Our younger generation needs to realize the importance of universal immunization and to keep up with the current trend and requirements. Their interest in the subject will hopefully keep the momentum going."

"Hong Kong is a business city. Our meaning of life and our competitive strength depend on how well we understand business, its importance and its limitation. Business reflects how well we relate to each other as fellow citizens in the globe. It also reflects how well we bring blessings to each other, creating and sharing wealth together, productively and equitably. Tourism is a special kind of business. To be successful, we have to nurture a win-win attitude and beyond. The highest calling is hospitality, taking up the role as a host and treating each other as the most important guest. The United Nations World Tourism Organization recognized tourism ethics as the driving force for tourism development. The United Nations recognized tourism as a promising strategy for poverty alleviation for developing countries and also for developed countries. Tourism is impact investing. It tackles head on the problem of poverty alleviation and satisfies the bottom line.
In 1999, Hong Kong affirmed clearly the importance of tourism to Hong Kong and the Hong Kong economy. Since then, Hong Kong tourism has been growing by leaps and bounds. However, the foundation of tourism, like business and more important than business in general, depends on how well Hong Kong people understand tourism, its importance to our social and economic development. It will affect our ability to bring blessings to visitors from other parts of the world and to ourselves. This awakening brings a new way to lead our lives, a new renaissance. Hong Kong loses no time to take the lead. Our younger generation is our future. They ensure that we continue to take this lead."

"It is my honor and pleasure to be invited to serve as an Advisor in the Science Annual Quiz 2010.
For the secondary students who join the competition, I am sure that they will read more, think more and understand more about the topic that they are going to introduce; this process will also increase their interest in science as a whole."
"It is indeed my great pleasure and honor to serve as an advisor of the Liberal Studies Cup on Science organized by the Annual Quiz this year. I am deeply impressed by the past events organized by the Annual Quiz, which have been much welcomed by secondary school students and the general public. It is most appropriate to choose Science as the main theme of the Annual Quiz 2010, as science is playing an increasingly important role in our society as Hong Kong develops its knowledge-based economy. Yet promoting science to the general public has always been a major challenge.
The Liberal Studies Cup on Science would give secondary school students a golden opportunity to introduce the principles of scientific knowledge and investigations to the general public. Both students and the general public will certainly learn a lot through this meaningful competition. I commensurate the hard work of the organizing committee and the participating students in the Liberal Studies Cup on Science. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all who strive to make this event a most successful and memorable one."

"This project will provide the opportunity for the students to be acquainted with the Olympic and Paralympic events. Participation in the various activities will most certainly also enhance their appreciation of the Olympic and Paralympic spirit, thereby creating / leaving an intangible legacy of the Olympics in Hong Kong."
Mr Timothy Fok Tsun-ting, GBS, JP
"Quizzes are globally popular as a teaser for the intellects. These contents of recall and knowledge are the Olympics for the brainy. Many of us less gifted stand agape, watching how some genius reveal their power of recollection that is simply startling. We of the Olympic movement are proud that this year, for the Annual Quiz 2008, the Olympic year in Beijing and tangentially in Hong Kong, the organizers have elected the Games as the most apt theme.
Every so often there is an international survey on the average intelligence level of sample communities and the latest indicate that the medium IQ score in Hong Kong is among, if not the very highest thus censused. The Annual Quiz is a way of giving empirical evidence to a theory, a hunch, that our people excel in the sports of the mind. We should be proud of these genius in our midst as we are of our athletes for they too must endure rigorous training and discipline to prevail."
"The Annual Quiz allows students to take part in liberal knowledge competition. This year's topic will let them have more knowledge on the Olympic Games. For Hong Kong to host both the Olympics and Paralympics equestrian events is our opportunity of the century. The Annual Quiz will help to get students and their parents focus on this Event and help them to understand more about the Games.
We are at the final stage for our preparation work. The Equestrian Company is working closely with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Jockey Club, Hong Kong Equestrian Federation and other organizations to hold a high level Equestrian Event with special characteristics. Wish the Annual Quiz a great success."
"The year 2008 marks an important year to all Chinese people. For the first time in history, China will play host to the 29th Olympic Games in Beijing and the Equestrian Events in Hong Kong. We, in Hong Kong, take great pride in becoming an Olympic co-host city in this world class sporting event. As citizens of an Olympic co-host city, we should take the opportunity to deepen our understanding of the Olympic Games, its history as well as the Olympic spirit. There is nothing better than gearing up the knowledge of our younger generation through games.

The Annual Quiz will continue to have the full support of the Government."
